Grill element and top of the oven will always get a beating. Especially if you cook a lot of bacon or sausage a under the grill as all the fat spits back.
Just need to keep on top of it. I have been known to take the element out and give it a good scrub but I don't recommend this unless you know what you are doing with the electrics
