Need a GPU now but wish I could wait - EVGA step up question

Hi.

I've been waiting for my birthday (next week) to build a new rig.

I am coming from a laptop and my stepson's rig uses all my old stuff so I am at a standing start.

Having waited this long, I'm loathe to wait any longer but I know new graphics cards are looming.

Due to my ITX and FSX considerations I really want to go Nvidia this time but my budget is £260ish and although that puts me into 770 territory, the thought of dropping that cash on a 2gb card when the 280x has 3gb is not one that fills me with joy.

I could pinch my dad's 470 to put me on as he is gaming on his laptop these days but I was thinking about getting the EVGA 770 and stepping up after the 880 comes out if it's a viable option.

I know most of how it works but I'm unclear on what happens if something comes out that's say the equivalent of the 770 but smaller, cooler and with more VRAM (perhaps even for the same price or less than what I paid).

What would happen then?

Also I know this probably gets mentioned somewhere but could I switch from amd to nvidia or vice versa?

I could get a 750ti then sell it later but don't see that as the best option.

Thanks a lot.

If you're going to spend £260 on either a 770 or a 280X then for the love of god my man spend an extra £20 initially and get a 290 4gb. Makes much more sense and will be a good deal faster too. Comes with three free games too which if you sell will recoup you £25 or so.

290 won't fit and too hot and hungry for my build.

How much space have you got in inches?

As for too hot, it's a lot cooler and quieter than most out there.

What power supply have you got?

Finally, which 770/280X cards were you considering?

Thanks.

Ok I should have given more info but I'm still trying to avoid bring stuck with something when the new gear comes out.

I'm doing an SG05 build (450wpsu) with a 4790k. With a dremel you can make 10.5 inches of room.

I'm still undecided about the merits of overclocking a 4790k, especially as I'll need to buy a cooler so I'll be running stock for a few months and would like to keep temps sensible.

I intended to buy whatever fitted and was the best value out of the 770 or 280x.

I've been looking for the dimensions of 280X cards on OcuK but surprisingly none are listed.

Nice CPU and the 750Ti will cope fine for FSX. If the 880 is shorter (no idea it will be but time will tell), and if it is released within 90 days (They are talking between September and Novemeber), you can step up :)

Hi, generally you can use the Step Up program if a new series will launch within the first 90 days of purchase. If the new card is cheaper then what you have paied for your card you do not get the money back, in this case we exchange it just to the new model. In my opinion a 770 is the right joice at the moment if you watch out to use the step up in the future

Thanks for your help.

I think the 770 is best too as I could use it for a year and then upgrade whereas I know the 750 will have me itching to step up and I might end up spending more than I wanted.

Being lazy/careful now, could I ask you to find me the cheapest evga 770 that OC sell that is 10.5" or less and eligible for step up?

Thanks a lot.

The only 770 with a extended PCB is the classy version, so all others should fit. If you will go for the step up the price now do technically not matter... If you safe lets say 10 Bucks now on the purchase you will need to pay 10 Bucks more for the step up card... My favorit would be the dual BIOS version... There you can flash whatever BIOS on the second chip or use the OC Bios we do offer and get the max out of the chip
