need a laptop 300 quid max

trying to find a lappy for my sis ... for .. need it as a xmas prezzy for daughter...

budget is 300 quid max ... has to be a good build ... no cheap plastic tat ...

will be used for homework ... surfing etc.. preferably with a dvd player..

can anyone recommend one ?

Or, you could buy a refurbished Pentium-M one (but they tend not to have long warranties), although the cost makes up for that.

Also, battery life is usually far superior on those models.

The acer extensa 5220 is a rugged enough low price laptop ( i have one ). Its not going to win any beauty contests but its solidly built and has upgradable cpu/memory and so on. Its got an intel gpu so it can play older games reasonably and the inbuilt wi-fi is fast with good range.

Weight wise its a bit porky but the battery lasts a good 2 hours when not playing games and the dvd playback is fine.

The 5220 comes with a 1.8ghz celeron but i got a 1.8ghz core 2 duo chip from thebay for 25quid and upgraded the memory to 2gb for 20quid and stuck a 160gb 7200 HDD in ( sata ) and it flies now at most things.

You can get one for well under 300notes.

Cheap and very cheerful ive found.

The other option is to go second hand.
