I have 2 problems with my computer at the moment.

1.
I want to reinstall the whole thing as its doing my nut in on how slow it is and the amount of junk on it. I have reinstalled before with ease. But this time, i stick the XP disk in - make it read CD ROM first in bios. It says its reading it but then it just skips the cd and goes to hard drive meaning it goes back to windows.

So i made it just use CD Rom and disable the hard drive. When i did this it just stuck in the BIOS. What is wrong with it? :(

2. I shut down my computer yesturday (or tried too) but instead it restarted. I thought nothing of it and presumed i clicked the wrong button so i redid it and it still restarted instead of shutting down. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

1) Give the CD a clean and try it again. It might be worth checking if there are any jumpers that need moving on the back of the drive too.

2) It sounds like your computer is crashing when you try to turn it off. To stop it doing this and give you error messages so you can tell what is wrong, you need to make sure you havent got automatic restart switched on. That can be found under: Control pannel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery settings > Automatically Restart.

Hope that helps!

PK!

shouldn't be a jumper problem, should it? if the drive is seen in the bios, doesn't matter if it's primary/secondary/anything else, should be bootable...

is it a real XP disk?

Check that USB legacy/keyboard is turned on in the BIOS, have seen a few machines that will detect keypress to enter setup and then stop detecting during the rest of the boot process causing the inability to press any key to boot from cd-rom.
