Hey guys,

looking to jump on the quad core 6600 G0 band wagon and such im looking for a new hi-end motherboard that will support over clocking, water blocks and SLI (8800's)

Been looking at the evga black pearl but reckon i can source water cooling cheaper by finding the parts myself plus the fact they use alu, and not copper waterblocks as standard on that board.

So you guys are the experts, which board do i need?

ps. id prefer ASUS as never had a problem with them, but open to suggestions.

PPS needs to be able to support 4gb ram 4x1gb or 2x2gb ;)

cheers for your help all.

if you want to use sli then a 680i motherboard will do you find.

BFG680i, EVGA680i, AUSUS Striker Extreme 680i,

As to your memory 680i mother boards will support you memory inquiry

The perl uses innovatek blocks that use a copper base due to the thermal paste innovatek use and recommend. The pearl mother board uses cool laboratory liquid pro. Innovatek recommend Liquid pro with their blocks. Liquid pro reacts with aluminum bases only and not copper (just for info).

As to cooling all chip sets not worth the hassle you would require a number of loops to remove the temps especially if you intend to over clock.

A D-tek cpu block will tame the Q6600 and water blocks for your 8800's can either be D-tek, EK, Danger Den ect.

You can use one loop to cool 2 8800s and CPU, although a recommendation would be to use a rad such as the PA120.3 to remove the temps.

cheers AssBaby,

if i did want to cool chipsets etc like on the black pearl would the difference in price between striker and the pearl be offset buying water blocks or am i better off with the black pear as an inclusive package for £350+?

to be honest with you the striker extreme is an awesome overclocker and as i have said in previous posts if i were to do another 680i build this would be the board i would buy.

I water cool my board i cool only my Q6600 using a D-tek fuzion and my GTX using a danger den full cover copper block.

For 350-00 quid you can purchase the striker extreme 4 gigs of geil 6400 memory and the rad and block and water cooling components for 350 even under.

By cooling all the chipset blocks using w/c does not mean better over clocks in comparison to a w/c cpu & gc.

Is their an actual specific reason why the black pearl and all blocks is a requirement?

A financially sound approach would be a i suggested above and the performance will be just as outstanding if not better than the black pearl

You can buy the innovatek blocks as a kit for £180-00 but then i suggest you look a MIPPS as an alternative as they are all solid copper blocks. I cant link to either site as competitors and is against forum rules. But both are German manufactuers (google is your friend). MIPPS are made to order and are in my opinion outstanding performers. My brother uses them.

Thank you assbaby,

I know very little about water cooling and the black pear was on my hit list as it had everything on it already, however, as i have been reading more and more into watercooling im finding out the best possible solution is a custom one, to which im going to have to pay somebody to put it all together for me, i really dont fancy trying it myself.

As for the memory selection, i currently have 2gigs of the corsair 8500c5 the version without the spikes on it, however that was fairly expensive when it came out, im not sure if you can even get it any more? is their any reason why you suggested the geil memory, i was always under the impression the more you spent on ram the better the performance?

thanks for your advice so far!

Sunburn.

custom is the way forward. The memory you have already is fine. I suggested geil as an example as i was not aware that you had memory already.

The lower the timings the more expensive the memory is a general rule to thumb. Ie 8500 (533) will cost more than 6400 (400) ie (1066mhz vs 800mhz)

where abouts are you located?

Id recommend you read the reviews and tests performed on the motherboards first. The reviews and tests will state memory used.

This will allow you to make an informed decision.

Set the selection process as a stage.

1 mother board

2 memory

3 CPU

4 CPU BLOCK

5 Graphic card blocks

6 Barb sizes/ tubing

7 pump

8 Radiator

10 res.

11 Case ? internall or externall radiator install

my email is in (click on trust) if i can help any further

hey guys thanks for all your help, in the end i went for the evga 680i, time i tested it they had released the 780i due to the recent change in penryn support, to my horro the 680i was DOA and i have now been told by the supplier that they have no more in stock so a blessing indiguise maybe... problem is, i really lost faith in the 680i and it make more sense to go for the 780i chipset, can any one recommend a good 780i board for the above configuation (see first post) Time is pressing me on this build now and need a board that wont be DOA or need RMA'ing

look forward to your help in advance.

Sunburn
