My PSU recently died, I have managed to borrow one but it only has a single pi-e connector. It also has two Molex connectors, so would making one with wires be safe and advisable?
Also the PSU is a Alphapower ATX-850L, I can't seem to find anything about this PSU online, I'm a bit worried that it is a really cheap PSU and might take out my system.
It sounds like an el cheapo to me. Is it an 850W ? and what are your system specs
I must admit I have never heard of Alphapower. Also a good quality 850W psu would have 4 x pci-e cables. The fact that yours only has 1 is not a good sign.
Can you see the sticker on the side of the psu ? You want to look at the 12v rail and see what the total wattage and amps are. A good quality unit will be able to deliver 800W+ on the 12v rail.
Here is an example -

The 12v rail can deliver 840W and 70A.

I would look at getting something like the above.
I have a RMA with Corsair (AX850), so I am not in need of a new PSU, but thanks anyway.
Power supplies are things people often love to get excited about and massively over spec.
True, some PSUs are total junk, but the way people attribute price to quality has gone beyond silly.

I think a lot of it also depends on the manufacturer in question. Some like Enermax are very expensive, whereas Superflower who are on par are priced very well.
Example being:

1 x Enermax Platimax 1000w '80 Plus Platinum' Modular Power Supply (EPM1000EWT) £229.99

Total : £401.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

The AX850 that I have\had was one of the best on the market. Anything that is a Seasonic is very good.
That is trueJust a shame Corsair are now starting to use cheaper oem's.
The AX860i is still very good.
Flextronics are a good oem. I am referring to the lower end Corsair stuff that used to be Seasonic. They now seem to be using cheaper oem's like Greatwall.
