Need a motherboard, but dont know where to start!

First post so go easy :D I'm looking to upgrade my whole pc, but due to not having a lot of money, I'm going to do it bit by bit as I get the money :( As some motherboards seem to come and go quick, I thought I would start with that! I was going to get a Asus P5N-E like my father in law has, but you cant seem to buy them anymore! So what would be a good one to get? I'm not really looking to overclock, as never done it before and would most likely break it lol. But would like the option of SLI for later down the road maybe...

Budget is about £100, could go abit higher maybe. Only looking to do some gaming and general pc stuff, would also prefer Intel over AMD

Your only option for around your budget and with SLI is this one here, though I dont think the nforce chipsets are very stable until you get to the 790 series which is way outside your budget. Your other option would be to get this board here, however this doesnt support SLI, you can still stick a very good single gfx card in it (either ATI or NVidia if you're Nvidia fan), if you did put an ATI one in it does allow you to add another later in crossfire
 
Well when you're only upgrading one piece at a time, I hate to say it but you're wasting your time with the motherboard. Yes, it's shiny and new, but until you're at the point of upgrading your other components that your old mobo can't support, there's really no point in upgrading.
For example, assuming your current mobo doesn't support SLI, and you're getting a new mobo for SLI, wait until you have the money for both the new mobo and the additional graphics card - chances are, prices will have come down by then, and you'll get no performance benefit by upgrading your mobo in advance.
 
I don't have the money to buy it all at once, and would break into it if I was saving. I built my old computer bit by bit, its just a chance I have to take the bits all work :D Can't upgrade my old pc because its this

AMD Athlon XP 2800+
Asus A7V8X-X
1GB Ram
RADEON 9800 PRO (128 MB)
80gb Seagate hard drive
60gb Maxtor hard drive

Not a bad pc, its done me well! Can play Team Fortress 2 & Guild Wars fine :cool: But because its all so out of date, I need to upgrade everything
 
Yes but what the others have said is sounds advice, youre not going to see any improvement buying the mobo, stick it in a savings account, wait til you get round 400-450 then buy a basic new set up of mobo + cpu + RAM +gfx, that way you'll see a nice improvement when you do upgrade

Yes, you'd be able to get a better motherboard. But what are you going to do with the motherboard? Your current system is too old to transfer RAM or processor. If you buy a new motherboard now you'll still be using the current system and the new motherboard will be gathering dust somewhere. Until you've got the money to upgrade your motherboard, AND processor, AND memory, there is no point in buying any of them as none of them will be used until you have all three. Save up the money until you can afford all of those main three in one go, the parts you're looking to buy will become cheaper anyway. Every other part of your system is interchangeable with different components, but not CPU motherboard RAM.
With £160 you could actually buy a low-end Core 2 or X2 motherboard, processor, and 4GB RAM - maybe that's the way to go if you want to upgrade now, it'll be a big improvement on what you've got atm, and you can worry about upgrading graphics or HDD etc later, when you have more money.
