Hi all, a little question...

I want a new 1tb drive. As it will probably mostly store files, speed is not that essential... so I think the wd drive should be the obvious as it uses less power, or am I wrong in that account. The Samsung F1 seems pretty popular, any reason to prefere that?

I have a wd aaks 500 gb, a wd ks 500 gb and a seagate 200 gb. And soon a 1tb drive... How would you guys set it up?

I game and like to have tons of games i like to have installed and not need to uninstall whenever I get something new. I have also backed up most of my media for easy access too, hence the need for storagespace. (and yes I own all of it myself).

I Have thought of a raid 0 for os, and games. the 1tb for media and... well the 200 for.. I dunno, but I own it.
Would that be a good option and how should I set up my disk-caching optimally?

Just curious as to how you guys would do it so I can get the more or less optimum ;)

Thanks in advance people.

WD RE2 would be a fine drive.... 5 year warranty and the cheapest so ideal for storage. It does also use less power than a standard drive but we're talking a few watts so it's not going to save the planet all by itself.

A 1GB raid 0 array seems a little reckless unless you have a backup solution.

For the OS and game installs you might want to mirror the 500's to give you a level of redundancy... do you want to reinstall all you games and lose your saves if a drive fails?

The 200GB would go into a USB caddy for backup of critical data.

I'm assuming the 1TB contains media that you could replace, even if it would take a while

From what I read here it seem the array seldom breaks, and for games and os I, at the moment, don´t feel intimidated about loosing saves. Important documents I put on the 200gb drive at the moment wich I then make hardcopies of now and then.

But it is not that I feel I need the raid, just that when I get a 1tb I have two 500gb disks wich brings the question... to raid or not to raid:)

The new drive would also give me a reason to make a new clean install. Although it might be bothersome, it usually brings a nice new smoothness to the system.

What about cache? Other drive than boot drive? And size? At the moment Windows is handling it, poor idea?

If a single drive's file system gets damaged it's often possible to repair it and recover most of the data, problem with RAID0 is that once it's broke that's it - gone. Losing a RAID0 has happened to me several times over the last few years and only once was I able to get it back online without re-formatting.

For cache I'd use a separate disk from the OS (and of fixed size). Some say you should leave a small pagefile on the C: drive as well as some services expect to see it there. I've tried both and had no probs with having the whole pagefile on a separate disk.

Thanks guys.

Seem I will not raid then, I also don't feel my harddisk slowing me down really.
Any suggestions for what size the fixed size for the cache should be? With the new addition I should be able to assign quite a bit, although there must be an upper limit where it rather slows everything down due to the slowness of the disks.
