Well i've decided i'm going to need a new external drive as my existing 250gb caddie is packed to the brim... say about 3gb left? :P

just wanted to ask what external hard drive you would recommend? A few relatives of mine have had some problems dealing with external drives before, one was a Lacie 500gb, dont know what model but it would randomly lose all its data and i've tried using recovery software to no avail :(

So... i want to know which brand of external you would recommend nothing over 1 terabyte hehe ;)

just buy the SATA drive of your choice and get an icy box 390 for it

much better quality than the pre-built junk!

I've been hearing a lot about the Samsung Spinpoint F1 being a good drive, think that would work fine in an icybox?

bledd. do icy box do that enclosure with some firewire ports? I really like that one but need to piggy back some firewire drives.

I don't know why you'd buy a drive and something like an icybox - I always presumed that people used icyboxes for old drives they wanted to make external - not buying them both together.

cheapest icybox currently in stock @ ocuk: £17.61
maxtor 1tb drive: £92.81
total = £110.42

Maxtor external 1tb drive: £101.04

So buying a 'premade' external option is £10 cheaper and saves you some time. I've always also heard bad things about caddies that don't have fans and how they decrease the life of the drive.

for me, it's the shocking quality of most of the pre-built ones

i've had to replace so many enclosures for people, it's untrue

@bledd - what do you mean by quality and having to replace them? Did the electronics die or did the housing just start to come apart? I've got a WD Mybook here that (seems) very well built and that I've (touch wood) never had a problem with - but I appreciate that's hardly a representative sample!
