Hi guys, my 10 year old phone is starting to wind me up, not to mention that I got cheese sauce behind the buttons the other day. I don't even have an MP3 player at the moment, so I'm considering whether or not it's worth killing two birds with one stone.

How is the quality of MP3 on mobile phones, and are the only phones with 8GB space really expensive? I don't have a huge budget, I guess I'm hoping on spending no more than £150 for both an MP3 player and a phone.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

the new phones with mp3 capability are more than good enough and have been for a while imo.

Generally speaking the Sony Ericsson 'Walkman' branded phones tend be good for Music playback, but most phones are good for it these days.
Having said that, lots don't come with a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Which means you either have to use the supplied headphones or use an adapter, just something to bare in mind.

What will differ from band to brand is how easy to use they are, which is probably something you might want to try for yourself. Maybe have a play with a friends' or ask in a phone shop to try some out?

With regards to storage space, many phones come with a memory slot so you can put in your own 8gb card. 8gb MicroSDs can be had for about £15, although the Sony equivalents are a bit more (about £20-25).

imo, its always worth it. phones might be good enough (in most people's eyes) but the battery life isnt. i dont use my iphone for music at all, i stick with my sony mp3 player because it doesnt kill my phones battery and it sounds better.

Aye play a few mp3's on the HTC diamond touch and it's not going to last long at all:(

nokias seem to have pretty good battery life when playing music. why not go for one of them with a 3.5mm headphone jack built in?? its why ive gone for one. that and wifi connections.

OK, thanks guys, I hadn't really thought about the issue with battery life.... I think seperate it will have to be!

Thanks again.

While I'd largely agree about battery life the Sony-Ericsson W880i is exceptional in that regard, the music player is good and the battery life lasts for days even when I use it for a couple of hours a day for the music player. It doesn't feature a standard headphone jack (it comes with an adapter that plugs in the data port) and the camera is rubbish but other than that it is a brilliant little phone and quite tough to boot.

Seperates, IMO.

I bought an N95 8GB for that very reason and sold my iPod. Within 3 months I had bought another iPod.

The K750, K800 and K850 are all very good music players and the battery life lasts a long time.

The only downside is the proprietry connection, but you can get adaptors for a few pounds on ebay.

Having said that it is good to have a separate mp3 player so you don't have to have your phone on you. What mp3 player are you thinking of getting? Most good 8Gb mp3 players are £100 or more so that doesn't leave much for a phone.
