Need a new PSU 4 my CF 4870's but which one?

Thats what I was thinking, I cant test so will have to take a risk, new PSU

Thanks for all your help btw
Look at it this way, getting a higher powered psu with the correct native connectors is a good future proof upgrade. And your old one may still have some second hand value, assuming its overloaded and not faulty. Also a bigger one wont cost any more to run, in fact get could be even more efficient.

So you gonna knock it on the head for tonight Loowi_ashley? . . . Think you can kick back and do some gaming with just the single card?

Haha just one HD4870 tonight, what a bummer! :p

Dig out the reciept for your 600 OCZ GameXstream and get some emails fired off for an RMA, as its two years old you will probably have to deal with OCZ themselves but I hope this doesn't involve sensing the *faulty* unit back to America!

Bit of a pain for you but once u got it sorted you will be the porud owner of a kickass Crossfire system :)

Hey toucam, that's my old chassis, a classic from 20003, used that model for four years or so, but compared to a modern case its really aweful.

It's one saving grace however is cavernous amounts of space so hiding cables is particularly easy. I can tell you though that chassis will make your PSU run a lot hotter due to its old fashion placment at the top, this will make the fans run louder and almost certainly decrease the units lifespan.

Now I understand why some people are still using captive cable PSU's, when you got an aircraft hanger for a chassis it matters not! :o

Yeah, I know it's not thermal-optimized like all the latest out there but had been running my Seasonic S12 500W in it for three years without any problems and no over heating whatsoever. I don't think it runs any hotter though as my PSU is only warm to the touch under full load.
Should have upgraded to a better one but as I'm probably soon moving to another country due to work so a new case is on hold ATM :) Really fancy a new CM RC-1100 though :D

My 620w Enermax liberty ok?

Hello easyrider, when I look for a power supply unit, I always go by the possible peak power consumption of a system and not necessary the average power that said system may draw. Now, because of this, I tend to overestimate on a power supply unit a bit much. However, that's only because, I don't really want to recommend a power supply unit that is enough just for the average power consumption but has the extra headroom and will be absolutely fine if the system will, for whatever reason, pull the absolute maximum out of every single system component. Some people may not agree with this and that's not fair enough but I want to be absolutely positive when recommending something as a power supply.

If we take the maximum power consumption of the ATI 4870 which is around 175 watts which equals to 15 amps. So, two would equate to 30 amps. If we then add an overclocked Q6600 running at 3.3Ghz which would consume around 150 watts which equals to 13 amps and then finally a couple of hard drives rated at one amp each and then some for the extra headroom, you are looking at around 48 amps. Now, the 620w Enermax liberty is able to provide 36 amps on the +12Volt rail which I’m afraid is quite a bit lower than what is actually needed.

I also believe, from reading some of your previous posts, that you have quite a heavily overclocked system which in effect will require slightly more power. Given what has been said above, I would personally recomend the Corsair TX 750W ATX2.2 SLI Compliant PSU. :)

Anyone: Would the CORSAIR HX620w be enough to run 2x HD4850's? (or 2x HD4870's) in a normal system with normal amounts of hardware?

Hello Big.Wayne, the Corsair HX 620W would power either a dual ATI 4850 or a dual ATI 4870 based system absolutely fine. :)

For me I never run a psu at full tilt, cos thats just asking for trouble, I like a good 100watts to spare, atm my system uses about 300watts when gamming and I have the corsair 620watt psu so that means I can use a good 200 more watts up before it gets to its last 100watts. So cross fingers this psu should be good for the next new sys I buy in about 2yrs time, but I will prob keep this system as a 2nd pc, cos its the best and tidiest sys Ive ever bult, and I would hate to take it apart, cos It took my hrs tidying the cables inside. As you can see it a big inprovment to my last system....

The only downside with Corsair TX750 is that it sounds like an F15 with afterburner lifted !

I have the Corsair TX750 and it's silent for me - it's so quiet I wonder if it's on :D. I put my hand at the back and feel a little breeze coming out from it.

A Great PSU.:)

I don't understand how it was like an F15. I have quiet fans on the case and I still can't hear it.

Either he has his fan covered or he has a very warm system.:D

You don't own a TX750 so you don't know that CWT's design actually covers half the back grill with a plastic shield. And no my whole system was OUTSIDE the case and all the windows in my room were opened.
