Ive been doing some upgrades recently (thanks Crysis), and i think its really grinding at my PSU. Currently im using a Thermaltake TR2-430W, with this system -

AMD X2 6000+
4GB DDR2 Memory
GeForce 8800GT 512MB
Vista Home Premium

I got the graphics card a few weeks ago, and the proccesor and memory in the past week (Coming from a X2 3800+ and 2GB of DDR2), so im thinking its not quite safe as it is atm.

Id like to get a new PSU, with PLENTY of power, as rock solid as can be, and if possible some nice LED light thing or something to look a bit nicer, what would you guys recommend ? What are the good brands etc ? Thanks in advance :).

try the corsair 520W or 620W if you can afford it and you really want to bs sure its powerful enough, even though the 520 version should be fine

The reviews look really good on them, and they appear like rock solid PSU's, seem like a good choice :) Do they have any flashy lights on them ?

You'll probably find that your current PSU would work just fine although it will slightly depend on what graphics card you had before how much of a step up it is having to make. The Ram won't make a huge difference and the CPU probably won't either in terms of actual power consumption.

If you are going to upgrade though the Corsair HX series are a good choice. :)

Well it's made by Seasonic who also make the Corsair units, so the only real difference between it and the hx620w for example is the single big 12v rail.

EDIT - Oh and it has a 3 year warranty not 5 year, and lastly it is not a modular design so you'll have cables galore inside your case. I guess the lower price makes up for that in a way though.

People really seem to like that Corsair 520 then hehe. Im curious though, would it take an 8800 Ultra no sweat ? Im not looking to buy one, but it would show the PSU is good stuff :).

Im leaning towards that one now (Is 520W really enough ? Would more only suit mental SLI systems etc ?).

Ordered the HX520, thanks guys :) I didnt want to spend to much, and the 5 year warranty gives me peace of mind, so it was the right choice.

Quick question, is 1 large +12v rail better than a triple one ? Or does it even matter ?

The Corsair is a large single rail PSU, although it might claim to be multi-rail it is in fact single rail and has no internal limiters to split the rails. It probably doesn't make that much difference for most people anyway and the Corsair is one of the best. :)

Ok well i received it today and put it in, seems good, but ive noticed it seems to run quite hot (i touch my case above where it is, and theres quite a bit of heat), is this normal ?

have you installed it the right way up

which way is the fan pointing

Downwards. I think its deffinately deffective now, as the fan on the bottom is making a clicking noise, and the fan looks like its whimpering away, its very slow, and the entire PSU is VERY hot.

Anyway im returning it for a refund now. But im curious, do you guys think my old ThermalTake TR2-430W was enough for the job ?
