My current router keeps disconnecting every hour and I have trouble getting it to work again. Any ideas on what I should get? I'll be used ethernet cable to connect to it but my family will use wireless

thanks!

He means bog standard broadband?
cable i.e. virgin?
fibre optic cable i.e. BT Infinity?

Who is your provider?
and Post stats from your router :)

Does your computer lose all connection to your network or does the router stop connecting you to the Internet? You'll want to know which one. Knowing what provider you're with helps us figuring out what gear you have. If you can get some line stats from your router that also tells us if your Internet connection seems unstable or if it's indeed a problem inside your network.

To answer your question more generally though - what do you use your network for? Do you stream high-quality video over the network or move big files often? Play games? Do you need a USB port for storage on the router? Something like an ASUS RT-N15U would probably cover any needs and I can pretty much guarantee it'd be stable.

i'm not sure what internet i am on my parents own the contract they are useless when it comes to this sort of thing all i know is i am on BT wireless and download at 2mb/s, my internet should still be ethernet cable compatible right?

seekified when i disconnect all of my devices lose internet to the router, e.g. my computer wont allow me to access the router control panel and my phone will get disconnected too, if i go downstairs to check my router all the lights will be off such as DSL wireless etc.

thanks

Hi Sam

In terms of the connection will your parents give you or allow you to have all the details in respect of the connection?

On the router what does it say it is and if not what does it look like? It sounds like for whatever reason it is shutting down, what do you then do to get it back on do you take the plug out and back in or ? It would be quite unusual to just shutdown but if it is resetting then could be a power issue or it is getting too hot or it is a router issue.

In terms of replacement routers - as stated how do your family use the router? I use gargoyle but that's probably technically beyond where you want to go (but is a very good solution for sharing low speed adsl and keeping quality or service)

If you are with bt internet you could just call them and they will likely supply you with a new router - maybe worth checking your contract as you could use it as an opportunity to get a new deal with them if you have completed your existing contract.

My parents said to me that they will ring BT up in a couple of days and get the information from them which i will then post here :)

as for checking the router which i currently have, i am currently using a custom one which i bought which is netgear instead of the old BT one, the reason for this is because last time i had a BT router it blew up for some odd reason when we plugged it in, we called BT and they said they were going to charge us for a new one so we just bought one from the net as we had previous problems with BT routers in the past when i was gaming i'd get really bad lag spikes, but with the net gear router it has been fine for the past few years so i am happy with that, but the last few weeks it has been disconnecting so maybe its starting to die?
