I'm wanting to upgrade my SSD (currently a 120GB Vertex 3) to a 256GB drive.

I've heard a lot of good stuff about the Samsung 830, so I was thinking of getting one of those, would anyone recommend otherwise?

I thought about the 840, and (other than not being out yet) the standard 840 doesn't seem any better, and the pro is far more expensive, so I don't think they're worth considering.

830 gets my vote too, seems to be very reliable, crucial m4 isnt a bad drive either depending on the deal/price ect,ohh and ill throw in the sandisk extreme

+1 from me as well for the Samsung 830, I've just installed one in my rig and it's excellent. I ran CrystalDiskMark after installing Windows on it and the results for me were 522mb/s read and 425mb/s write.

From looking at the 830, there seems to be 3 different versions, and from what I can see, these are the differences.

Standard -Just the drive.
Desktop - Drive, SATA cable, 2.5"-3.5" bracket, Norton ghost. (about £30 more)
Laptop - Drive, SATA -> USB adaptor, Norton ghost.

Are there any other differences that I've noticed?

Just choose the cheapest option, the others are a lot more expensive just for a bracket and the software, the free magician tool will do everything you need

The drive itself is exactly the same

Yeah unless you fancied the 840 pro? Not the standard 840 as its slower

Thanks wazza300.
That one should be fine for me when the time comes.

May I ask but I dont want to waste your time because I'm not in the market for SSD.... just yet, but what advantage would the 840 PRO have over the 830?

Thank you again.
