My 990 has had a fatal accident and I need to spec up a new setup with newer technology. Unfortunately I am limited on my knowledge of Ivy and Sandybridge.

Here is what I have

24GB in 6 x 4 GB sticks of DDR3 1600 RAM
Water Cooling loop XSPC
SATA III Samsung 830 SSD
2 x SATA II 1.5TB HD Drives
2 x GTX460 SLI
850W corsair
Case ATX Form Factor

Ideally I would like to use all of the RAM if possible so need a board to support the following

SATA III
USB III
SLI for the cards
5.1 Sound
Be a good O/C board
No need for integrated graphics

Now I am unsure whether to go for 2600K or a 3930 unlocked ?

Can someone basket me the two options please as I am lost as to what is possible. It is urgent as I need the PC for work.

Thanks

Looking at the 2600K and really need a decent motherboard that can support good O/C, SLI with 2xGTX460, USB3 and SATA III. They all appear to have onboard graphics so will have to live with that i suppose.

Worked out I can use 4x4GB of my RAM leaving 2x4GB left over as spare to sell.

Any thoughts on a Motherboard that would suit my needs, Ideally Giga or Asus

Ok, what do you do on the PC? I mean is there any need to go for X79/2011/6 core over Z77/1155/4 core?
It's quite a price difference, although in budget either way.

Processing images / data and the odd game play hence why I had the X58 and 990

They are dead now, so need a replacement and unsure whether 1155 Sandy or Ivy or 2011 Sandy is the best route.

After someone to spec out a 1155 Sandy and Ivy CPU / MB combo and also a 2011 Sandy combo for under £800

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-3770K 3.50GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £251.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard with FREE BOOGIE BUG XXL GAMING MOUSE MAT £129.98
Total : £393.37 (includes shipping : £9.50).

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-3930K 3.20GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - Retail £437.99
1 x Gigabyte X79-UP4 Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard £209.99
Total : £658.78 (includes shipping : £9.00).

Have a browse of the motherboards and find one that has everything you need if either of these don't cover it :)

Right mind made up, 3770K it is.

Now to find a motherboard, the UD3H looks good, but with the money saved over the 3930k, wonder if can get better ?

ok gone with the 3930 and board option. Order has been place with the site.

A quick question. Can I put 6x4GB RAM onto this board seeing it has 8 slots.

I have 6x4gb DDR3 sticks currently.

Not sure if I can only put in 4x4 or 6x4. If it is only 4x4 then for £40 I can get another 2x4 to give 8x4=32GB

I'm not too sure tbh, but I think you need to use 4 sticks (on the grey slots) to utilize quad channel.
Someone else needs to step in here for clarity.

I think you are right, so will make do with 16gb to start with and for about 40 notes get 2 more 4gb sticks to fill the slots to 32gb.

Can anyone else confirm this please?

Btw thanks for the help uncle Peter :)

Ordered and will be here tomorrow.

Just had a thought too, is the back plate on a 2011 chip different to a 1155 as I suspect?

I only have a 1155, 775, 1366 and AMD back plate kit with my CPU block.

Might be calling O/C in the morning after the additional 2x4GB sticks to max the slots and give me 32MB and after a 2011 back plate.

Not a problem mate, hope it serves you well.

Btw, that's pretty sweet rig there, post pics if you get a chance.

Will do mate when all the bits have arrived.

Should be a 3930K O/C custom loop w/c with external mounted 240 RAD Hoping for an eventual O/C of around 4.6Ghz
32GB 1600RAM
256 GB SSD OS SATAIII
3TB SATA II Raid 0 Data
2xGTX460 SLI
Logitec 5.1 system
2xHP L2208w monitors. Old and may get replaced when I have cash.

Major improvements will be from the 990x O/C to 4.67Ghz SATA II with one GTX460 , to a 4.6Ghz O/C 3930k with SATA III, USB III and the dual SLI GTX460's.

Good cruncher for my astrophotography and video editing and good enough for the games I have started to play again.

Just been stripping the case, re-routing all cables etc ready the new M/B and chip. Sticking with my old Antec 900 series case for now, hence the external mounted rads which I love as they are next to an open window.

Thanks for all the help mate, much appreciated.

Arrived this morning. CPU on the board and RASA water block attached. Need to drill some holes in the case for better fan fire routing and then ready to start the installation :)

Will take some pictures of the build as I go along.
