I have a Packard Bell IMedia X2414 Desktop PC and i need to upgrade it for gaming purposes, Current Specs Are Pathetic In My Opinion

My current Rig is:

Motherboard: Packard Bell BV (Model) MCP73VT-PM
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 7050 / NVIDIA nForce 610i
RAM: 3GB (1Gb and 2gb Sticks)
PSU: FSP250-60HEN 250Watt

Budget is around £200-£300 any help is hugely appreciated if you need anymore rig info lemme know.

Thanks,

a new psu of around 500w rating and a GTX460 768MB card are needed for that pc.

you already have a Quad core CPU and 3gb of ram isn't to bad.

Yeah, a new GFX. and a good PSU for it. CPU is not bad at all. Not sure about a 4 GB upgrade, since you have unmatched sticks, but I'd expect it'd be marginal.

460 GTX 1024 mb : £145
Crosair CX 600W (not modular) : £55

-> £200. Will play anything you want.

What about compatability issues my friend said there might be something to do with GDDR5 or something. i've been looking at the GTX460 but im not sure what slot it requires and if theres and compatible issues with the motherboard. im a noob to the tech side of PCs

the memory of a graphics card and the memory of a motherboard are completely unrelated.

that GTX460 needs a PCI-E slot.

PCI-express slot. It's either that or AGP. I doubt you have AGP :) But check the motherboard. Would be interesting to see if it's a 8x or 16x PICe slot as well.

The memory technology of the video card has no impact on the compatibility.

BTW, there could be compatibility issues between the PSU connectors and your motherboard 24 pins connector vs 20 pins connectors). But usually, you can work around that.

The Slot is a PCI x16 i checked before. and my psu atm the connectors are

1 20/24 pin ATX connector
1 4 pin p4 connector
3 Molex IDE connector
1 Floppy
1 SATA

If that helps :)

Hopefully HP left some space at the back of the PCIe slot. Hard drives can get in the way of long video cards.

EDIT : Another upgrade thread that might interest you.

Seems that it's been done before. Try to stay with good PSU brand. Corsair are very good, but you may be able to reduce the watt requirement (and the price). Also depends if you want to keep the hardware for another later upgrade. The GTX 460 should be good enough for a few years to come, and a 600W PSU as well.

Kk ill get on to posting a pic of my pc.

EDIT:

Pics of the PSU and general inside not amazing quality but best my phone can do ;) Length Across x16 slot is around 12 and 3/4 inches and the 460GTX according to nvidia's specs page is 8.25 inches long.

EDIT: Also what is the best GTX 460 1gb to buy new theres so many options. and i read that they need 2 PCI-e 6 pin connectors for power which the cables come with the GPU but my psu has 2 8 pin PCI-e Connectors just some confusion there. Sorry For Being Such A Noob

The case is too small for adequate ventilation, you can add a couple of 80mm fans but due to the design of the case, the fans will have to be high speed to keep it cool and it will sound like a hovercraft. The original aim of that system was to be a media pc. Games machines are a world apart and thermally designed cases are what you need.

£300 is a decent budget to start to build something decent. Why not consider transplanting what you have into a budget gaming case? As always with a gaming PC, get the environment right then build on that. A house is no good without good foundations :)
