Need a point and shoot for gigs

Hey guys

Going to a gig on Friday and obviously won't be able to take my 400D, so need a good point and shoot that will produce quality photos

My Fuji Finepix F810 Zoom just isn't up to the task anymore. I'm always at the front row or near enough for gigs, so am getting pushed around a fair bit so the ability to take pictures under those conditions is definitely a must

Also want it to be pretty compact so it's easy to keep close to me to protect against damage

Don't want to spend more than £200 if I can, so the lower the better, it will be a gigs only camera so not used all that much. But I like good photos when it comes to one off events so don't want a cheap and nasty one

Cheers guys

What about the Fuji F100fd?

Reasonable sized sensor for PaS (1/1.6")
Wide angle (28mm equiv) - useful if in front row
IS - required if being jostled about
quite compact and unobtrusive.

I was looking at that one actually, but wondered if Fuji were worth going for over the Nikon or Panasonic models

Don't know if it's still true buy Fuji were renowned as the kings of low light in the compact market so would be ideal for a gig situation

i had a Fuji F-30 which worked well in low light, lost it on the last tour though :-(

took hundreds and hundreds of shots between charges as well.

I imagine the higher models would be even better.

I've not used any of the fuji's though they are supposed to be reasonable in low(er) light. (it's all a bit relative in compacts).

I used a Panasonic LX1 (now superceeded) to take this

at a gig last year. As far as I remember, that's straight out the camera..

(it looked good on my previous (profiled) monitor, but a bit too much brightness on this one.. I must get a profile done for this one :))

Just bought the Fuji F100fd so cheers for the recommendation guys

Had a little play and seems great, might actually use it for more than just gigs

Cost me £200 with a 1gb Ultra2 stick and a case so wasnt too bad

Well every compact is as good as the next then really...

On compact recommendations, go for an IXUS, they're nice to use. Buy the most you can afford.

That's the biggest heap of crap I've ever heard!

You want a compact with a large sensor with good noise handling capabilities

very few meet this, and a few that do it amazingly well are the Fuji F range.

You want to get a Fuji F40fd or if you can find one flying about somewhere a Fuji F31fd

They are simply fantastic.

Both taken by the F31fd

EDIT - seen you've bought a Fuji, good choice :) Though the higher Pixel count will give you a bit more noise and you won't really need it unless you plan on getting the pictures printed at a large size.

Metro Arena by any chance? I wouldn't have been that far away to your left. Awesome gig. :D

I'm debating whether or not to take my DSLR to see R.E.M. in August at Old Trafford (the cricket ground, not the footy), but then I keep coming back down to earth and remembering it's Manchester, so probably not such a good idea. :(
