Hi all.

I just sold the 911 and need something to get around in until I find another car. However I will probably keep the car for 7+ years and just use it as a run around.

Budgest is £5k but I can go up to £10k if its really worth it.

requirements:
4 or 5 doors.
low running costs
Not fussed about fuel economy as I will not do many miles.
Not too big
Not too old
Not over 60k miles
Not fussed about badge but would like something thats reliable
Cheap tax would be nice

I was thinking for fiesta but there must be better options out there. I like the golf but they dont seem to be good value for money.

Golf? Mk V, with maybe a 2.0TDI, you can pick one up for around ~5.5k, that's pretty good value?

Otherwise Focus may be worth a shot

An odd recommendation but its got 4/5 doors. Running cost are very low, fuel economy 23-25mpg around town, 35mpg on a run. Its big and are 10yr old, mileage possible and tax is cheap.

Jaguar S-Type, mine was £700 and is an old one but 5k would get you a very clean S-Type, X-Type or equivalent Mondeo, they are reliable cheap to run cars or certainly in my experience, only downside they are a bit large.

What about a Ford Focus? Those are pretty good cars and seems to fall more in line with what you want.

So have you got rid of all your 911's now?

Thanks for all the useful suggestions, I will look into them all.

Gibbo, The problem with the S-Type is that its probably going to have stuff go wrong over the next 5+ years of ownership and then throw up small bills here and there.

Re the 911, I have been paid for it but the new buyer will collect the car in a couple of weeks when I am back form Australia. The plan is now to have some fun with a few cars, possibly a R8 V10, Maserati Granturismo, Audi RSTT.

After the 991's have dropped to £55k for a PDK S I will buy that and just keep hold of it and will probably stop chaining cars every 2 weeks.

A mate had a mps6 he sold it on complaining how it sucked on fuel. He did state he got under 20mpg, something around 15mpg. HE was a little heavy-footed, but on most occasions it was city driving. I don't know much else about the engine other then what he's told me and from what I've heard from others. All complained about fuel.

If you want a run around just get something like a petrol golf/a3 that will last. You can park it anywhere and not worry.

Not the Aygo. My girlfriend has the pre 2009 facelift Aygo blue and it leaks like a sieve and is built like a tin can. The 2009 facelift isn't much better. I haven't driven the 2012 facelift, but if it's still the same car underneath and just tarted up again, it'll be the same POS. They were supposed to resolve the leaking issues, but they didn't. You will regret buying it. That said, ours does 60mpg or there abouts. Costs £30 or so a year to tax (later ones are £20). But the only enjoyment I get from driving it, is driving it as hard as possible in an attempt to kill it because my girlfriend doesn't want to part with it.

Honda Accord?

It's what I'm looking at, with a budget of around £4k and similar(ish) requirements to yourself.

I did just over 30k in an Aygo in 18months, it served its purpose with some cheap motoring for me and getting some no claims under my belt. But, if you do anything other than go about town it's not the one. Unless you drive it fairly hard you will struggle to keep up with traffic on faster roads. It has been built down to a price, and it shows as mine also leaked into the drivers footwell via "a service port for the speaker in the door card" according to the dealer.
