Need a storage solution for new build

Each time I go to spec my new PC build I just keep going smaller and smaller case sizes. My latest idea is possibly an Ncase M1 with liquid cooling.

But here lies the problem. A case like this will give me maybe 1 or 2 SSD's, perhaps 2x 240gb. This is enough for the OS, and perhaps a few of my regular games such as WoW or Skyrim. I could fit an SSD but I'm not sure on space yet.

However I do a lot of photo editing and my new business venture is likely to make me require video editing too, so 480Gb won't cut it.

Is there any form of fast external storage for file storage? I often see NAS banded about, but this surely relies upon a fast network connection, not something that can be guaranteed in my situation.

Will a NAS slow my video editing down considerably with it having to fetch remote files?

Is there another solution to the obsession with small PC's and big storage?

Thanks,

If there's no 3.5" slots, a NAS might be the best option as long as everything is connected via 1 Gb/s Ethernet; WiFi isn't going to cut it. The other option is to go for 1x SSD (256 GB maybe) + 1x 1 TB 2.5" HDD but that's pointless if 1 TB isn't going to be enough. Remember you need backup options too.

If there is a 3.5" slot then just go for 1x SSD and 1x HDD for storage.

If it's video editing, buy larger SSDs.

NAS are great, but in the home environemnt, they should be used as a storage space, not as a constantly in use file store (ie, video editing)

So it looks like my thoughts of a super small editing PC wont be possible.

What is the best option for doing a "live" backup? The Ncase M1 will fit 1x 3.5" drive with some sacrifices, so I could squeeze up to 6TB WD Green in with another externally to back up to?

Well you can get a ~115MB/s connection to a decent NAS (if wired in with gigabit connections).

But compared to the ~550MB/s of an SSD, it's not comparable.
