Need a tad bit of help

Today my 2 hard drives and ram arrived and decided i should probably do the ram first, stuck it in and default was 800 mhz so i switched it up in bios and here are my results:

3 mins and not a hitch (did it a quick one just to make sure its good) this is also with prime running in the background which i forgot about

Excuse the temps, this has always been a hot chip unfortunatly, 2 motherboards and 3 coolers have been used on it and its still the same "/

Im not a fountain of knowledge, to me this looks okay however id like a second opinion this is with kingston hyperx btw :)
Excuse overclock.net i still had it up from when i grabbed orthos
 
I'm not entirley sure what your asking, but:

Run memtest and then a prime95 blend test for few hours each if you want to identify that your memory is stable.

As for your settings -at 1066MHz the CAS settings for that particular memory should be 5 5 5 15 @ 2.2v (voltage maybe able to be run lower - worth experimenting)

just checking everything there looks okay really right now, ive had a few times where ive missed something and its gone belly up lol, just spent the past few hours installing xp, fun fun fun
 
Other than your settings (15 instead of 18 - but it's no biggie) and additional stress testing - everything looks fine.

What is your case & have you tried clocking the chip?

Even if it is running slightly hot you may still be able to get a reasonable clock at defaults/slightly higher vCore. This would, hopefully, have minimum impact on your existing temps and at least start to justify them.

i unfortunatly havent managed to move out of my Thermaltake shark i got a fare bit ago, but i had just a cheap one before with 4 fans in (1 on top, 1 on side 1 in the front and 1 in the back) and its still ran a tad toasty, every time ive tried to oc its restarted fine but once it starts to load windows just trips and does it over and over again (i think ive not tried in a while i gave up lol) anythings worth a try because i wouldnt mind getting more out of it :D

If it's the VA7000, which i just googled, i can't see the case being the problem for your temps. What fans have you got attached and how have you got them orientated?

Also, how tidy and dust free is your case - is their a relatively clear passage of air from the intake?

What were your opening settings and did you allow for the ram divider when upping the FSB?
 
well, i have 2 noctuas one front going in the other on the back going out then a arctic freezer 7 pro, my case is pretty tidy (ill try and get a pic up) and to your last question i have no idea, last time i tried was around a year and a half ago "/

with my case being open on the side i get terrible dust problems so im forever cleaning it out but i must admit lately ive been a bit lazy :D

What settings should i start out with and slowly work up?

As you don’t know whether or not you touched the ram divider I would say that you didn’t which is why your clock attempts would have failed.

Actually, before we try and clock your system we could concentrate on getting your temps down - by taking your vCore off auto and under volting it. It's defaulted at 1.3250v which is 0.025v-0.175v below the highest recommended voltage so it could be that it will run at a significantly reduced voltage – which in turn ‘should’ reduce your temps.

Once you’ve found a stable lower vCore we could then look at clocking the system if you were still interested. The irony being that you may jump straighty back up to 1.325v but, I get the impression that temps are more important to you?

What’s your complete system spec and what are your temps at idle and under load?

id say yes that temps are more important too me but a bit of an overclock wouldnt go a miss lol :D
 
i went in the bios, downed the voltage a few times, set it so it runs at 2.4 constantly and heres what i have

i forgot to record temps before i started this and put my case fans on as high as theyll go (fan controlled)
ive left it at the above screenie and waiting for the idle temps to stablise then ill crack on with orthos see if theres much more of a differance
idle temps have reached around 44-46 so on i go :P

What is your MB? And what were your original load and idle temps before we started this?

Don't worry about posting pics each time - just list the vCore at load and at idle, load/idle temps and the application used and for how long. (you will need to do a Prime95 blend, too)
 
i use a Gigabyte P35C-DS3R

my idle temps before were around something like top end of 40 idle uner load hitting the 60's

Right now cpuz showing vcore 1.058, 40 idle on both cores and hitting 47 3 mins into orthos
shal i carry on going lower?

Hehe, you knocked off a whopping 0.25v straight off - i was going to be a bit more incremental but, as it booted and is stress testing ok, so far, we'll run with it.

If it remains stable after a few hours of prime95 and Orthos - i would then use and abuse it for a few days and see how you get on. Even though it may pass stress test after stress test, you may find you run into cold boot issues or random errors/freezing during general use - so it's important that you have few days of general use to see how it behaves.

Your temps are already benefiting form the lower vCore – and hopefully it will pass the further stress testing. If it then goes on to pass the 'everyday use' test – you can then think about OCing the CPU, if you’re still interested. But if it's doing everything that you ask of it and you finally have temps that you're happy with - it may be worth living with a cool setup for a while - as your new temps are looking very encouraging.
 
yeah i agree, ill probs leave it for now then later on when my internet gets cut to half a meg ill run a stress test and get on with work, thanks for your help mate :)
time for some cod4 me thinks :D

Yes, definitely leave the vCore setting for now - unless it buckles then you'll need to up it a fraction, i suggest increments of 0.025v at a time.

Let me know how you get on, hopefully, you've finally got a cool CPU - or at least - well on the way to achieving one.
 
after being on over night while i downloaded ut3 about 40 mins ago it froze, so i left i for a bit upped the voltage to 1.072 so far so good though, reaches around 50 - 52 after a few hours of cod4/LFS
