Need a towing machine

I know this probably sounds daft, but have you ruled out putting a tow bar on the M3?

Just don't try to do 160mph towing a caravan, unless your soul ambition is to win a Darwin award it's not recommended.

I have thought about it, but it can't be done easily. You have to make some fairly significant modifications behind the rear bumper as the E46 M3 was not dsigned to take a tow bar. Also, it's an SMG which would not work well with towing.

I'd also be tempted by a large car rather than a 4x4. It'll be cheaper, more comfortable, will return better mpg and will still tow well.

I tow my racecar around the country with a Mk1 Octavia 1.8T 4x4. It pulls it very nicely.

I used to tow a huge 8ft high box trailer around the country with it too. That would have weighed more than you are planning on towing - the weight was no problem at all, although the height of the thing did give it a lot of drag at higher speed! Still the car coped just fine.

Yeah, I've though about this too. I do a lot of fishing also, which can take me to some pretty remote locations: hill lochs, rough tracks etc so a 4x4 with decent clearance would probably be better suited to that also.

Then, there's also the missus to consider and needless to say she would rather a 4x4 than a large estate!

Still an option though.

What about an old ford explorer? You can get one for under £1000 and when I had mine I towed all kinds of stuff with no problem whatsoever. Was also the most reliable car I've ever owned - literally nothing went wrong in the 100,000 miles i owned it other than consumables. You could keep the m3 and wouldn't have to worry if the explorer got damaged off road as you've only invested £1000 into it

XJ (best year is the '96) Cherokee 4.0? Not good on fuel but extremely comfortable, well-equipped, easy to drive and immensely reliable. Not as bulky as other 4x4s either, it's relatively compact so doesn't cause grief in towns and tighter spaces.

You'll get a really nice one for about £1,200. Potentially with LPG, if that's something you'd be interested in.

I love 'em. Quite quick, too.
