Hi all. Ive got an old ide hdd (see pic below) & would like to get access to it so retrieve some old photos.
Is there any way i can power it up externally or find some sort of usb connector.
I searched the net & came accross one adapter (see pic below) but it did not work. Please recommend me something to get it up & running again, links would be nice.
Thaknks.

You can buy USB to sata/IDE cables. I bought mine for about £12. I use it for backups using my sata HDD and also for my IDE DVD burner. Mine also has the smaller IDE you find on old laptops too.

Search for USB to sata IDE. Mine looks like the Dynamode one and works brilliantly. It came with all cables and its own power supply for whichever drives you need. Bit pricey for the one off though.

I used one of those adapters you have in the 2nd pic and my IDE drive works just fine plugged into a SATA cable and molex power cable(mines has a slightly different layout though). you sure the hard disk isnt broken?

Did you make sure there was a molex power connector going to the hard drive, and a 4 pin floppy connected going to the adaptor? That adaptor you have should work fine

Also, do you hear the drive spin up at all? It may be that you just need to give the drive a new drive letter from the disk manager

Everything is connected as it should be & i can hear the disc spinning. When i connected it up my pc said it was updating the drivers & successfully installed ATA channel 4.
Ive looked everywhere for the drive but just cant find it, i must be doing something wrong but what it is i dont know.

Click the start orb. The type computer management into the search bar. Click on the link then storage in the window that pops up. Then you can see disk management which Gary is refering to.

Click on this then you can see the drives connected and assign a drive letter to your "new" HDD

First check disk managment like others have suggested, if it says it's unformated do not format it. Get some recovery tools on there.

If there's no drive shown check the instructions that came with the adapter?

Ide drives have three settings called Master, SLave and Cable Select. These will be changed using a doofer called a jumper that will connect somewhere on the block of 9 pins between the power and data connectors.

nothing showing in the disk management just my other 2 drives. There are no jummpers on the hdd so its set to slave.
I can hear the disc spinning just cant find its location.
Can anyone recommend me a ide to usb converter

I can't mention where its from, but if you search "BB05 Trixes 2.5 / 3.5 SATA IDE To USB Adapter Cable for Hard Disk / HDD" you should find it - Never used it, but 4 and a half star rating with over 1000 reviews is pretty decent, and it's only £6.99
