I've been toying with getting an nvidia shield tablet for playing games on and watching movies etc as i find myself working away more and more these days. Plus i have a macbook pro sat idle, which i intend to sell to fund my need to buy new shiny things :)

What appeals to me most about the shield is the wireless controller and being able to use emulators to play n64 games etc.

Now, I've read that the battery life isn't great but that was only on one review. I must say though i'm not overly concerned about this as at the moment as i can't see past being laid in bed with it connected to my TV while i play Goldeneye :D

The shield as package is really appealing as i would also get access to a games library and can stream games (if/when i swap to nvidia).

I have looked at a few other tablets but it's not an area that i'm too familiar with and being able to use a controller is a must for what i want one for so it's made it even more difficult to narrow my choice down as i don't know if i can even use a controller of some description with any other tablet. I did read that i can use a PS3 or wired 360 controller with an android tablet but i don't know to what extent i will have to mess about with it to have a good experience.

Am i being narrow minded here and are there better options than the shield? or is it the best choice when your buying for the purpose of gaming/media?

Whats thrown me as well was an image nvidia posted on facebook with the shield logo on it, it looked like there's possibly a new version coming out so i don't really want to drop £300 then something better comes out a month later haha.

If anyone games on any kind of android tablet using a controller (shield or not) it would be great to get your input and feedback on your experience, even better if you run emulators!

Ok let me simplify the question a little.

Does anyone play emulators on their android device, do you use a controller and how does it handle it?

I use mine mainly for movies on the go as you cannot beat the front facing speakers for this. I have played afew games and they work spot on with zero lag.

Keep eye on that auction site if you want one, I would go for a 32GB if your going to install a lot but they can support upto 64GB Micro SD card which I put my movies/shows on to watch.

Previous shield tablet user here 32GB LTE model with controller and all :)

Had great gaming horsepower, speakers, stock android with super quick updates and worked brilliantly with its controller

The Grid game streaming service worked ok too, need fast connection though

but I disliked it because of the following

Screen was soooo poor in brightness and colour
battery life was abysmal playing games to the point I had to have it connected while playing
Its also quite heavy so holding it up while watching video started to become a pain

personally I find screen, weight and battery life key to a good tablet

So I got the next best option for me the Sony Z3 tablet and its awesome

Screen is great
Battery great
Super thin and light weight

Also i can finally play Xcom! nvidia shield has a few compatibility issues with certain apps

I'm yet to try gaming with the ps4 controller and mount but ive heard of an app Moonlight Game Streaming which works well if you wana stream games from your PC.

Thanks for the info!

Can you connect a ps/xbox controller to android devices then? That's something i need to read up on before i make my decision on what to buy. i don't mind paying extra for the shield if it's just easier to use the controller that you can buy for it but if its easy enough to connect a controller to other adroid tablets it makes it less of a selling point, especially as i already own console controllers.
