Need advice on nVidia graphics card...

are you sure you need to go nvidia, you'll be losing money/efficiency and features going nvidia at this moment in time :(

the 4890 will keep up with the 275 and cost a lot less, for the price of a 275 why not go 5850, more features, fps and lower heat??

Looking to buy a new nVidia graphics card

why?

for current and next-gen videogames, such as Bioshock 2, GTA IV, AvP, etc. Need it to last for a good 2-3 years.

I've got my eye on the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 275 Super Overclock GFX card...

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-057-GI&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1410

Specs look better than even some of the 295 series!

Opinions?

Well a 295 is just 2 275s stuck together, so I sincerely doubt it tbh :p

ATi HD 5850/5870/2*5770 would be my suggestion. You want longevity? That's where it'll be until Fermi is released..

you sure you want a old gen card?

also the HD4890 is cheaper and just as quick for an extra 30 pounds or so you can have a nice DX11 card that will out perform it

So if not nVidia, what would you guys recommend for around £300?

Try to find a 5850 at around £200, or a bit higher for a vapour x version. Once overclocked it will be as good as the 5870 only cheaper. If you dont want to bother just get the 5870 vapour x.

If you want to spend way less look into 5770/4890

How's the 5870 series, and ATI in general, for intensive HD video editing? Being that that's my job. I've noticed the top GFX cards supplied in the Mac Pro, for instance, are made by nVidia, and not ATI.

You're right - My mistake!

Was skimming past the prices, and didn't notice the highest price was for FOUR nVidia cards.

Not even four good Nvidia cards. Looking at Nvidia's site each of those cards (GT120) is basically the equivalent of a really crippled 9500 GT. Christ knows how they can get away with charging over £100 for each card.

Given that CF5770 are cheaper than a 5850 and faster, see this, and obviously a lot cheaper than 5870 you need to think again.:D

Well crossfire is crossfire, single cards are sometimes better. A handful of games don't benefit from CF too much, some others benefit nearly 100%. Also, not all boards support crossfire.

Additionally, 2*5850/70 is still more bang for the buck than 2*5970, and 4*5770 gets kinda ridiculous. That's why I listed that card as bang for the buck, since you can't really compare CF cards to single cards.

Besides, esp. at high settings / framerates the 5870 rapes the CF5770, for example the third graph shows CF5770's min framerate at 20 and 5870's at 40.

'That's why I listed that card as bang for the buck, since you can't really compare CF cards to single cards'

But thats exactly what you did, '2*5770'. Its a fair comparison if two cards are cheaper than one and performance is equal or better, in my opinion anyway.:)
