Ok, the update is that I have packaged the item up ready to be sent back to Nikon for repair. Gonna send it tomorrow. I think it is the safest option to be honest. Thanks for all your help guys.

What do you think I should do?
When you look through the viewfinder, the focus screen is in focus. The mirror is not. If the dirt is in focus, it is likely to be on the focus screen.

I shoot Canon but I expect tht it is the same with Nikon:
- The focus screen is a user changeable component.
- They cost about 25 quid.
- They come with a little tool for changing them with and a box for storage.

I recommend changing the plain focus screen for a grid one anyway, it is so much easier to get the horizon straight...

Using the kit, you can take the screen out and point a rocket blower at it.

So, yes, I think you can do it yourself.

On the other hand, having done it once, I will be taking it to a pro next time. It's a horrible, fiddly job. You are dealing with delicate, fiddling things and need to apply enough pressure to make the screen snap-fit. I could recommend a place near Victoria station, London, but not in Northern Ireland.

I'm also a Canon bod so not sure on the Nikon setup but for the 5D that you have, 1D series and the 40D the focus screen is interchangeable but it isn't on the other models in the Canon range.

Although, this doesn't mean you can't change them but you will either have to source a spare part or a 3rd party screen. You will also have to remove one part of the camera to reach the tab to drop the screen down and then the focus screen isn't just the glass; it comes in a frame that breaks down into three (?) bits. You also don't have the little tab for the tool to clip onto to remove it.

I've seen people swap screens in both the 20D and 30D despite Canon stating them aren't changable. I don't know anyone who has done the 350D / 400D.

Of course this will void your warranty.

I'm running the EF-D grid screen in my 40D and I agree it's much better than the clear screen.
