How do,

On Friday Ill be running a cooking session with a year 6 class. the theme is british Apples. I need a recipe/recipes that will take around 45mins to and hour (no less really) to cook in total. However we have no ovens! Anyone got any reasonably healthy ideas?

Yeah we have induction hobs and most other standard kitchen equipment, so frustrating not having ovens...

Is there a way to do tart tatins pastry just on the hob?

Poach them? If you're aiming to be healthy perhaps serve with low fat vanilla yoghurt mixed with a bit of cinnamon and honey, and maybe top with some toasted nuts to add a bit of texture.

Definitely need an oven for tarte tatin, but there's nothing stopping you doing just the apple bit. You simply can't go wrong with apple, sugar and butter, it'll be lush. You can't even get the ratios wrong, with lots of sugar and butter it'll just always taste good :D

Serve it up as a deconstructed crumble with the crumble made from crushed digestives, melted butter and some crushed nuts? It'll be a life-shortener but I guarantee there won't be a kid in the room that won't love it :D

Variety of apples... they choose, the first bit of the session is a taste test, they will have 8 varieties and have to give them a rating for sweet/sour crunchy/soft, then decide which is their favorite and want to use in the recipe.

The idea of a deconstructed crumble seems pretty good. We may have them making a few different things like the deconstructed crumble, some rice pudding, poaching them and putting them in yogurt.

I was thinking about getting them to make some proper custard, but I think for 10 year olds it may be a bit hard and too prone to going wrong!

Could do apple fritters but that wouldn't take an hour..
Tbh I'm struggling to think of any.
Things like apple sauce in doughnuts. But doughnuts would take more than an hour to rise.

Might be a daft question, but do you need to actually cook it during the lesson? If not then how about prepping an apple crumble with them? Easy for them to take home and stick in the oven!

One of my favourite winter dinners - pork & apple stove-top casserole.

Finely chopped oinion & crushed garlic sweated gently in a little olive oil. Add diced apple and your choice of pork (loin steaks are good as they're usually quite cheap, thin and no bone) and brown a little. Add stock and a large teaspoon of wholegrain mustard and simmer uncovered for 25-30mins until the sauce has reduced down and the pork is tender. Add a dolop of creme fraiche or double cream to finish and serve with rice or potatoes.

I so wanted to do something with pork, but the class has 7 children who cant eat pork!

Now if I could find a decent chicken and apple recipe I may do that as a savory, and them some sort of caramelised apple thing for a small desert.

I think apple crumble would be good. They don't need to cook it there, they can take it home and enjoy it at home with their parents.

I guess cider is out of the question? ;)

If you have a freezer, you could have a bash at making apple sorbet? Make it during the class, throw it in the freezer for the rest of the day (obviously this will only work if the class is in the morning) and let the guys collect it at the end of the day.

I considered pot roasts, but they all take at least an hour to cook really.

You don't need an oven for a steamed pudding, do you? You ought to know better than that!

No, but you often need longer than an hour to prep and cook it! ;)

I was referring to no oven as all the other things I was thinking about were oven based. Nice apple and stilton souffle? Yum! But oven. :p

You could probably steam a small sponge pudding in about half an hour, assuming you cheated and caramelised the apples first and kept the serving sizes to individual.

Perhaps the OP could do a variation on a no-bake soufflé?
