Need an exciting single player game.

Another recommendation for Borderlands.
My favourite game from last year.
A real fast shooter with loads of action.

I'm at a loss regarding some of the recommendations here, especially reagarding your specifications.

As good as they are, the Stalker games are quite plodding, as is Fallout 3. Don't get me wrong, I love all of theses, sinking dozens of hours into them. And Mass Effect 1 and 2 just get drowned in endless dialogue (called atmosphere).

As for Anno 1404, one of my favourites, but a bit short on the FPS action. :D

In my opinion borderlands is a single player game only, every time I've tried to play online I've had to lead my targets (I play as a sniper) to compensate for lag, it just gets so random that I give up.

I've never managed online but i can see how thats a problem. The biggest failing online though from what i've read is that even 1 level difference can make things obscenely hard for 1 player and obscenely easy for another. If its 2 levels then its not even a challenge usually with 1 player just walking through everything while the other 3 follow in his wake. It is great offline but can be a little repetitive what with the loot and the tedium of Playthrough 1.

Maybe I should add a few more parameters.

Have played:

STALKER SoC & CS. (great but I like to play it over months as the mood takes)
HL2 & episodes so far. (EP3 release getting frustrating but good games)
BF1942,BF2 &2142. (Don't do the online clan thing anymore as it sucked out my life!)
CoD + 2 MW + WaW. Love 'em all and really want toplay MW2 but it's too pricey and dodgy MP.
Bioshock (ok)
Quake IV (brown and pants)
Oblivion + all DLC's (fantastic)
Fallout 3 (brown and ok)
Dark Mesiah (choppy chop fun)
All PC Wolfensteins (fun but not to be taken seriously).
IL2 etc
SH2
Currently playing Dead Space which is causing me a shortage of fresh pants!

So I like shooty shooters and choppy choppers.

How good is the shootyness in Mass effect and Metro 2033? I want something to absorb me and I really want noisy bangy guns:D

As your list seems to point to Oblivion most of all, why not try Morrowind?

Although I'm a bit surprised because you specified an FPS, and Oblivion's quite far from that.

Anyway, just go for Borderlands and have done with it. :D

As for Mass Effect 1 and 2: Meh!

Oblivion is a game I've got hundreds of hours on.
Im deliberately looking for a high energy sp game that drags you in and leaves you sweating at the keyboard unable to stop. (as I've got the house to myself for nearly a week and won't get nagged by the missus!)
I found the CoD single players most like that but feel MW2 is overpriced and sold out like a hollywood whore.
So im just enquiring as to what other similar sp games are around that give you that feeling.
I like either long term games you invest time and effort into or short intense sp games with an mp option that doesn't involve time investment.

Assassins Creed 2! yes the DRM is ****! but I'm managing to play it with a flakey satellite broadband connection without problems, so if you have a halfway decent B.T line BB connection you'll be o.k. The game is much deeper than AC1,absolutely loads to do with very nice visuals and sound.

Maybe it's irresponsible of me to inadvertantly support the unreasonable DRM by purchasing the game,I totally disagree with its implementation but lifes too short to hang around waiting for it to be patched out. I'm slightly annoyed at myself for buying into the DRM but on the other hand i'm really enjoying the game!

If you dont mind very aged graphic (800x600) then try Fallout 2. It's so much fun, THE BEST SINGLE PLAYER GAME EVER MADE! Fallout 3 is just too grey and serious in my opinion.

Crysis is also good much better than Bioshock in my opinion. Very enjoyable+nice graphic.

Play Doom during night-time with EAX and 5.1 set-up and you'll **** your pants.

Fallout 2 and Doom III can be had for few pennies these days, definitely give them a try!

Age Of Empires III is my favourite too. More fun when you go multiplayer but even offline it will keep you entertained for a while.

Done some youtubing and have to rule out ME1 & 2. Far to consoley and dialoggy!

As a wildcard I looked into The Witcher. This looks pretty good and Witcher 2 is out soon.

Reckon I'll go for The Witcher or Stalker CoP and maybe a gamble on a cheap steam deal.

I really wanted a slick and polished SP shooter but it seems they're overpriced and undertime.

Currently Dead Space is pretty good. feels very clunky moving about and aiming but once I got into the habit of approaching corners and doors with the aim up it was'nt so bad.

Thanks for all your suggestions and any tips/links about must have Witcher mods etc would be well appreciated.:)

I've been playing the Just Cause 2 Demo for about 3 nights in a row (tis fun! keep finding new stuff to do) so maybe try that, it's out soon.
