I'll be the first to admit I am hopeless with heights, and as such am naturally overly cautious when using ladders, so I'm looking to invest in a good quality set of ladders that I feel confident enough to use. I have borrowed triple extension ladders in the past and I feel more confident on these than a double extension ladder, as I can have a bit more tread under my feet if necessary.
We live in a typical Victorian terrace, and I would like to be able to get to gutter height and be able to use a stand off.

I am looking for recommendations as to what I should be looking for and where to buy from. I am not overly concerned about spending a bit more than your typical high street ladder prices if necessary.

If you don't like heights and don't feel confident then don't buy ladders you need to be comfortable working or you will hurt yourself!

I am quite confident given a suitably sturdy ladder and would argue that any concerns I may have about working at heights only add to my consideration for using a ladder safely. What I want to avoid is buying some high street flimsy rubbish that will bend in a strong breeze.

If and when you need a ladder that large why don't you hire one from Speedy or the like? It will always be tested and of the latest regs where as in 10 years your mid range ladder is a liability.

To merge both replies:
As a1ex said if you are not keen on heights maybe you should think about maccapaccas idea of hiring - at least that way you wouldn't waste money buying a ladder that you don't want to use.
Keep in mind that all ladders bend, the amount will depend - to a degree - on how much you are prepared to spend.
Hiring also saves you having to store it somewhere, and stops everyone borrowing it from you.

Thanks for the hiring idea, hadn't considered that was even a possibility.
