Hi,

I'm going to attempt my first gaming build. I have dealt with computers for years but this is my first build from scratch:

Asus P8Z77-V LX
Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz
MSI GTX 660 Twin Frozr III 2GB
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 8GB (2 x 4GB) Blue
Seagate Barracuda 2TB SATA 6GB/s 64MB 7200RPM

A couple of questions I need help with is:

1) What is the difference between a "P8Z77-V" and "P8Z77-V LX".
2) What is the difference between a processor that is OEM or RETAIL.
3) What size of PSU would I need and should go for modular or not.
4) What kind of CPU Cooler should I go for?

Thanks and please also give me advice whether I should buy a different part that may cost not a lot more but will be better for me.

:)

What haswell chip would you recommend. I saw this one which is a little more but would this give me better performance?

Also would a Socket 1150 fit into a 1155?

I would suggest this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - OEM with FREE Grid 2 PC Game £187.99
1 x Gigabyte Z87-D3HP Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard + FREE Be Quiet! Shadow Rock Pro SR1 CPU Cooler! £109.99
Total : £308.78 (includes shipping : £9.00).

The 1155 is not compatible with the 1150, they are completely different.

Ok thanks, and could you answer the other questions I have. Just want to make sure I buy all the right stuff :)

• OEM CPUS's come in a plain box without a heatsink, they also have 1 year warranty

• Retail CPU's have a nice box, stock heatsink, 3 year warranty.

• The D3HP linked too comes with a Be Quiet! cooler, this will do.

• A 550W PSU will do fine, stick to good makes, modular is useful too.

Hard to tell at the moment as it's all new kit. I would recommend sticking with Gigabyte as they are faultless with their products and you get UK RMA if anything does go wrong.

Thanks for the advice, im looking more into it now and the two motherboard I currently like are:

Gigabyte Z87-D3HP and the MSI Z87-G45 (gotta love that red dragon). Both are about the same price and the MSI has the sideways SATA ports so thats looking the better option, just going to check some reviews on it.

If I do go for the MSI one what CPU Cooler would you recommend? I am building this for gaming but I don't want it being extremely loud.

Ok after doing a bit of research this is what I think I am going to go for:

Case: BitFenix Shinobi German Edition Mid ATX (Black & Red)
Motherboard: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming ATX S1150 DDR3
Processor: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4Ghz S1150
CPU Cooler:
Graphics Card: MSI GTX 660 Twin Frozr III 2GB
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 2TB SATA 6GB/s 64MB 7200RPM
Power Supply: Corsair CX500 Bronze ATX

TOTAL : £760 (roughly)

Does that seem like a good deal or is there tweaks I should make?

You did notice that the D3HP comes with a Be Quiet! cooler right?
Yeah I looked into both...

The Gigabyte is good because it gives you the free CPU Cooler, but the MSI is good because it has the sideways SATA ports and matches the graphics card.

Both got pretty much identical reviews also, and I was looking to get a Corsair CPU Cooler so the free cooler wouldn't be as big of a deal.
