Hey guys,

I have a 2gb ADSL connection and when upstairs on the laptop (the wireless modem is downstairs) although it's only wooden floors I loose a lot of my speed.

Would one of the Netgear Rangemax wireless thingy's and PCMCIA card give me a better range over the standard BT wireless router and 54Mbps card I currently have in my laptop. I notice OCUK have a bundle on the Netgear 300 Rangemax for just over £100 you get both the modem and card!

I want to go with Netgear and also want the PCMCIA method for the laptop rather than USB dongle.

Is the 300Mbps complete overkill with my ADSL or should I go for it and have a bit of future proofing if I upgrade my speed in the future etc. And also the Rangemax says ADSL2+ will that work with my 2gb ADSL ?

Thanks for any info.

pre n should give you more range yes. Id also look at new linksys one as last time i used netgear rangemax (might not be current) it wasnt as good

2gb adsl whoa,surely 2mb

Unless your degraded wireless connection is pretty close to your adsl line speed say 4mb or less on the wireless then the faster wireless will not give you a speed improvement for internet use

you may get a more reiliable connection with newer kit but there are no guarantees

is it speed or reliability thats the issue?

Hi thanks for your reply. Yes it's a 2mb connection, posting messages too early in the morning there. :)

What happens is when i'm near the wireless router, ie downstairs I get a very good connection and when i'm upstairs it says 'low', this seems to affect the performance of my connection. I am just wondering if the rangemax would give me a 'very good' connection when upstairs also.

I know it's not an exact science but in theory I guess it should right?

Try netstumbler and see if you can move the AP or client PC to a more wifi friendly location. Other cheaper option is to purchase a larger antenna for your existing hardware from an auction site we all know. You can also buy/make a parabolic reflector....

Yeah try fiddling around with Coat-hangers and silver foil reflectors etc. Did wonders for my connection!

look around on google there might be some sites for DIY network improvement.
