Been thinking about getting a PS3 over the last few days with the bundle deals around, but what's putting me off is the games - even some of the best PS3 games, Motorstorm/Resistance, get pretty average user reviews on Gamespot, like way lower than Gears/Forza 2. The other games I might be interested in - F1/VF5 again very average scores. Genji (which I mention cause it's in some of the bundles) gets slated pretty much, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma isn't my sort of thing. Oblivion/Fear/Vegas I've already played on 360 or PC.

So then I took a look at upcoming PS3 titles, and until we get to the likes of FF13 (not my sort of thing but my brother loves them), Little Big Planet, the new full Wipeout game and GT5 (both definitely my sort of thing), which are all due next year, there really doesn't seem to be much on the immediate horizon right now - just GTA4 which I can pick up on the 360, and GT5 Prologue/Wipeout HD/GT HD which aren't full games. There are some other good games on the way over the next few months but they're all coming out on 360 too.

Anyone bought a PS3 and either loving it or bored of it and want to have a go at convincing me either way? I wouldn't want to waste half the warranty with it collecting dust when I could just as well buy it (probably cheaper too) at christmas.

I have one and feel the same as you with regards to games. I use mine to watch dvd's as its quiet and play a few PS2 games.

I'm sure in 6 - 12 months I'll love it but at the moment its kinda pants.

My 360 does just fine for now.

It doesn't sound like there's a 'must have' game that's driving you to buy it. This time of year everyone gets a tad bored and wants 'a new toy'; that in itself isn't necessary a bad thing as long you recognise it as such.

If there is nothing you 'really' want I feel buying one at this time will just result ultimately in disappointment (you'll probably have a great week or so).

Imo wait until there's a 'must' have game then get one and don't look back.

Games should drive console sales not the other way round.

There's no point asking to be convinced to get a PS3 here, everyone will just tell you to get a 360...

Quite right lol

Anyway - how come you need convincing ? - the web has all the info you need to make up your own mind. You're just inviting biased opinions here - that includes PS3 owners.

I agree, you need to go ask this question on a dedicated PS3 forum. You get too much of a sensible answer here, you need to go where its bias :D

im a PS3 owner, so this post is no way biased towards the 360

but there is very little real "reason" to get a PS3. There are no killer games for it. Most of the games available are on other formats, and most of the features are available on other consoles too.

The PS3 does have some neat tricks, namely that its a top end blu ray player supporting 24hz output. Its also an upscaling DVD player too, not to mention a media streaming device.

There are lots of real "must have" games comming to the PS3 like GT5, Metal Gear Solid etc.. but none of them are out yet. If you need persuading to buy a PS3, its probably best to wait untill there are some decent games for it. As Formula 1 etc.. isnt enough on its own if you're unsure.

If you need convincing to buy one then don't bother. Wait until there's a reason that makes you want to buy one.

I owned one and sold it but I'll get another once it's worth owning one.

Now I'm going to get people saying 'Why did you buy it when you knew there were no games!1!1!'

And I shall say, you would have thought there'd be some decent games out for it by now...

Wait until there are some deals around Christmas time, it is a lovely piece of kit but it just doesn't have the catalogue of games available yet to justify the purchase in my opinion.

Not to start a flame war or anything i wouldnt trust Gamespot PS3 reviews! I personally look at metacritic and have a read of the reviews from various places, i always read the lowest and the highest and few in the middle to get some idea. One thing that you have to remember is that for example Motorstorm and RFOM have both had some big updates including extra game modes and extra maps, new vehicles and maps for motorstorm are out in August. I used to be a big PC gamer with my PS2 as backup, I haven't really played a game on PC since about April when I got my launch PS3. Not ever got board playing games on it to be honest I dont have time to finish the ones I got. If you are unsure wait a few months till October November time and have another look then, when games such as Warhawk, Lair , Heavenly Sword, Uncharted etc are out (all PS3 exclusives). Sorry if this is a fanboy PS3 biased approach ;)

There are some stonking deals coming through for the PS3 now though, have seen £389 so far with two games, two pads and a HDMI cable... It's going to be similar or (OMG!11) even cheaper than a Elite with the same extra's.

I dont think theres much can be said to convince you to buy one if you arent convinced already.

Im a big playstation fan, and i would love to buy one, But now that the Shoddy Xbox 360 problem has been sorted, I'm looking to buy a 360, (But only if i can get a hold of a newly manufactered one which i know wont be easy)

Then i have some serious catching up to do gaming wise :D

So as I said, If you arent convinced already, Dont get one. Its a lot of money :)

I'll be buying either a PS3 or a 360 for the release of Rock Band/Guitar Hero 3. I'm pretty sure it'll be a PS3 I get though, hopefully by then i'll be able to get myself a bit of a bargain on one!

console gamings crap at the moment for me ,i hardly play on the 360 or my brothers ps3 :/ , wait till a game you really want is about

not that i can talk because i just got fully re addicted to footy manager :o

Take a lot at HAZE.. looks a good game on the horizon (that you didn't mention) :)

Unfortunately not a lot of games in the immediate future.. buying now 'for the sake' is a bit pointless, unless your in to BluRay movies or don't mind playing Resistance (good game IMO.. EXCELLENT online) and Motorstorm

Didn't make it clear that I already have a 360.

As for gamespot reviews, I'm going on the average 'user' scores not the gamespot scores or the average critic scores. I've found average user scores to be pretty much spot on most of the time.

Anyway, cheers for all the replies, looks like there isn't a really compelling reason to get one just yet. Heavenly Sword isn't my kinda thing. Haze looks awesome but I can play it at christmas. Not desperately into online so that limits the appeal of Resistance/Motorstorm a bit. Think I'll upgrade my PC instead.

Cheers again :)

I own a PS3 and for the past week all I've had it doing is folding. I like the console, just wish there would be more releases. Still its great for movies playback, and I think there is a good chance that BlueRay will win over HD-DVD, based on what I see in stores BlueRay collections are 2 - 3 times the size of HD-DVD
