Need cooling, fast!

Hey guys,

I was playing APB earlier, and decided to run speedfan to see how my computer was doing.

 <-- My face when I saw 85 degrees....

I just tested my CPU using Prime95 and was at 60 within a minute or so... (I'm using basic stock cooler)

So, how good is this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-072-AK&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395

and how does it compare to something like the H50? :)

Thanks in advance!

:edit - It's not even overclocked!

I think the h50 is only comparable to high end air coolers, a phenom quad won't pump out too much heat so that venom would be a great choice especially considering it's on offer atm.
I have a hyper 212+ and it's brilliant for the relatively cheap price, if you're only gaming and not overclocking I couldn't see you needing a cooler over £30 tbh.

Thanks.

I also quite like the look of this:

(but looks are the last thing on my mind right now :p)

You reckon the H50 will out do this too? :)

It's sitting at 65 at a menu screen on a game :(

Hmm, are you sure the coolers mounted correctly? might be a good idea to remount it, perhaps using some new thermal paste like MX3.

i believe speedfan is very bad at measuring temperatures of AMD chips. if your chip got to 85C it would almost certainly throttle back rediculously, or shut down completely

you have a very similar motherboard to me, so it may have come with a program called PC probe II. try using that instead.

however, i would still recommend getting a new cooler because the standard one is about as effective at cooling as an asthmatic blowing through a tube. its also ridiculously loud under load, sometimes going up to 6850RPM.

the venom is really not so great on AMD chips for some reason. no idea why, but it just isnt, so i would recommend you look for a different one.

going by my favourite review site, the Zalman CNPS9900-MAX (red or blue) seems to be incredibly good at cooling and quietness if you have the supplied resistor wire in there:

zalman max: http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=2567&page=4
corsair H50: http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=2564&page=4

Something does seem to be up with this, firstly the really high temperatures and cpu temp being higher in game than in prime :S Not sure of the max temps of your cpu, but I would expect the stock cooler to be able to keep it cooler than that.

Before you buy another cooler, I would definately try re-seating your cooler now to see if it improves anything.

Yeah it seems to be on fine!

I'm going to get an AM3+ board and bulldozer CPU soon anyway, so need to update the cooler anyway as the one I have looks awful :D It's minimum is 43... seems pretty high for minimum temps, no?

:edit: reading through other replies now. Sorry, I'm a slow typer :D

SpeedFan is reading the same as OCCT.

And that sucks about the Venom - looks awesome :D I'll have a look at that Zalman though, cheers!
I've not got Probe II installed, but do you reckon it'll work alright if I download it? I'm downloading it now :)

I only ran Prime for a few minutes as it was getting way too hot! I'm sure if I kept it running for a while, it would be right up there too!
The cooler I have now seems to be seated fine with a good layer of compound too.

Ah yeah completely forgot about that, the TDP max for Phenom II's is only 62 degrees, so 85 must be a wrong reading, 'pc probe II' should have come with your motherboard installation disk and will give you a true reading, other programs read my temps wrong also.

I tell a lie! My CPU seems to be maxing at 77, but "Temp2" is what's reaching 85 (84 in pic...)... no Idea what Temp2 is?

I did consider the Kúhler... Have you tried it? Any good? Looks great :D

:edit:

I have no idea where my motherboard CD is! I've had it over a year and don't even know if I got one (pre-built system!)

They readings are from SpeedFan, but I'll try downloading Probe again (corrupt DL!!!) and see what that says!

:Yet another edit:

Just booted into bios, and it claims the CPU is at 57 in the bios... surely not? Maybe a faulty sensor?

CPUID HW Monitor <-- That has so far given me the most accurate readings on my 1090T Also tells you what voltages things are running at. Have you check your Voltages in bios? I know my Mobo defaults to 1.55v which is just ridiculous.

There's nothing wrong with the Akasa Venom cooler, it keeps my CPU at respectable temps (low to mid 60's under prime and ibt) in a warm room (23c) and I have a toasty chip.

That is the one you have :) It's just the stock cooler that comes with every chip.
As soon as you get a new cooler, it will make a world of difference, now you just have to decide whether it's worth getting something more expensive (like the h50/620) which would be perfect if you were planning to overclock, or if you're just planning on leaving the cpu at stock speed, then something like the Coolermaster Hyper 212+ would be just fine.

Update: not as straight forward as I first though....

It seems the CPU aint the only thing heating up. "Temp2" from that screenshot I posted looks like its the chip under the heatsink between my CPU and Graphics Card...

If these AM3+ boards hurry up, I'm just gonna bite the bullet... new cooler, motherboard and RAM with some extra fans too - Can't really afford it all, but i'll just need to find a way!!

Antec Kuhler is superb.

ive got one and just got another one for a friend who wants to cool his q6600 like mine.

very quiet and great at cooling.
