Hi guys and gals.

As per the title, I'm looking for recommendations for the above four parts to go in a gaming build. I have all the other parts already, including a 1TB SSD, 16GB DDR4 RAM, Silverstone FT02 case, and a copy of W10. Later in the summer, I'll be upgrading my monitor to 1440P at 144-165 Hz.

So tentatively, I was thinking;

CPU - i5 8400
Motherboard - H370
GPU - 1070ti
PSU - 600W, or thereabouts.

I have a Scythe Kotetsu CPU cooler which would be fine for the 8400. If I go for a better CPU however, I'd have to buy a beefier cooler I'd imagine, which is going to eat into the GPU budget. I'm also really not sure about the 1070 ti - I've not been following GPU developments for a while. Is the 1080 a better bet? Any AMD offerings worth considering? As for the CPU, I'm not committed to Intel either.

So for £800-850, what would you recommend? If you need any more info, just ask, and thanks in advance!

what speed is your ram?
H370/B360 support 2666hz max .

i5 8400 and 1070ti is a great combo- used myself for 1440p gaming just fine and all cores boost to 3.8ghz which helps keep edge over ryzen 1600 and i believe just ahead of 2600

stick with 1070ti if its £50+ cheaper then gxt 1080 as you can overclock it to match stock 1080 .

Thanks for the reply! And excellent point re: RAM speed. It's 3200Hz - this kit to be exact. I bought it last year when prices were still climbing, and got that kit in particular in case I went Ryzen in the future.

So I'd need either different RAM, or a Z370 board? Thanks again!

Slam it in z370 board. What i did. Purely for the fact when you need more horse power you can get i7 8700k second hand and overclock or next gen CPU.. have to see on that part though

Though ryzen will offer better upgrade path and longativity to price then Intel currently

The ability to upgrade is certainly worth thinking about, but I tend to build from scratch when I need something new.

So, if I go for the Intel route, what Z370 motherboards do people recommend at the low end (obviously don't need a high end board with a non-K chip)?

And any particular brand of PSU worth going for?

If you intend to build new if you upgrade the stick with B360 , you you don't mind keeping board and upgrading CPU go with Z3Z0.

And personally would go budget if you intend to drop a K chip in future with overclock .

Strix / Ultra 2.0/ Extreme 4

Thanks Exo. Was actually looking at the Palit cards - supposed to be one of the quieter ones, which I definitely appreciate!

Just regarding the K chip; would that board and cooler (Kotetsu) combo be enough to tame temps if overclocking?

what is that cooler as the Kotetsu i saw didnt state 1151 socket? anyways you dont need an AIO liquid cooler, there are plenty of air ones if whatever yours is wouldnt be up to par.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

  • PSU is slightly overkill, but costs the same as Seasonic Focus 550w Gold (internally the Antec is identical). Same 10 year warranty
  • i7-8700 instead of 8600k means you can re-use existing cooling. The 8700 may also provide better longevity, due to 6 extra threads.
  • The Palit card has a very decent cooler, great price too. Only potential issue is shorter warranty, and non-EU RMA location.

But as already mentioned, the i5-8400/1070ti would also be a great combo also.

The Scythe Kotetsu. There's a mark II version out now, but I have the older one. It is compatible with socket 1151 though. It's more designed for quiet performance rather than overclocking high end parts, hence why I initially planned on pairing it with the 8400. But as you say, plenty of beefy air coolers on the market, if I go for a K processor.

Thanks for that, although my RAM is 3200Hz. The perils of a Frankenstein build I suppose - all the parts I have already are leftovers from other builds for friends/family members etc.

Can get a 1080 - possibly Vega56 if willing to go AMD, I think theres an adapter for your HSF, would have gone Ryzen 2, but theres quite limited availability on boards on OcUK at the moment...
