Hi all, I have a dynamic ip address assigned by Sky using their provided Netgear router. I want to run an FTP server, but my address changes too frequently for me to manually update my DNS record.
How can I set this up to work automatically?

I currently have a DNS / web url provided via Freedom2Surf if this helps.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks for that, it solves one part of my problem but not everything.
That will solve my pc based ftp issue, but I also have a NAS which I can run in FTP mode which I'd like to be able to access remotely. no-ip requires a pc to run it, and the NAS won't be able to.
I've heard people talk about setting their router up to automatically update their DNS record. Can anyone provide any more info on this?

i assume you're talking about some sort of auto update client? you don't need that, just update manually when your ip address changes which shouldn't be too often if you have a router? :)

you mention auto updating via your router. simply check through all the options/manual to see if it's supported. my bt router does but it works with dyndns (who i think are better than no-ip anyway :p). you simply set your login details into the router, so if the router loses sync or you turn it off/backon, it will update the site with your new ip. :)

some routers have built in dynamic DNS support

the thomson one that BE Provide does. Not sure your sky one will. It basically just takes your no-ip username and password and sends an update every so often with your current IP :)

works perfectly for me with my bebox. You may need to use third party software to extract your username and password from the sky netgear router, then switch to either the fully functional netgear firmware (as opposed to skys) or another router entirely

details of how to do both (revert back to netgear firmware and get your usernamd and password before you wipe it) can be found with a bit of googling.

It does indeed and I have now set it up. Thanks for the help.

The only downside is that I've just discovered that my Sky IP range isn't accessible from my work's network :(

After all that!!!!!
