hey guys

long story short, i've bought a HTPC case that looks sweet as however airflow is a problem. Then to add to it, me being a bit over ambitious have filled it with high end gear that i'm having trouble keeping cool lol

From all the years i've been modding shuttles for better cooling, altering the chassis's and covers, adding diff fans, more fans etc while keeping them quiet this one has got me totally stumped

Quick spec:

OrigenAE H7 HTPC case (google for more specs or pics if ya need)
Q6600 with a Thermalright SI-128 and an Aerocool Streamliner 140mm fan (with annoying blue LED's, i'm gonna cut these off!)
Sapphire x1950pro with stock fan

The case has 2x60mm fan slots at the back which is hardly gonna be quiet for a HTPC case, but still. With the SI-128 on, there isnt enough room to put the lid on with a normal 25mm deep fan. a way round this I found was to use an Aerocool streamliner 140mm fan, as these are only 15mm deep without the adapter. As the case is currently with the lid off, no 60mm exhust fans and this 140mm fan on top sucking air out its very quiet and keeps pretty cool. I run folding at home 24/7 and at the min temps are between 64 - 69 on all 4 cores at full load. with the lid on this soon rockets up to 83+ by which time ive taken the lid off again lol

The main problem is the lack of vents or case airflow. I have 2 60mm akasa amber's and have tried it with these in, they dont push much air and are quite noisey. I've also tried ledging 2 80mm fans at the back where the 60's would go, but again not much difference in temps and again, noisey

My only idea is to drill the lid and make a honeycomb grid type pattern where the cpu heatsink/fan is. I dont mind doing this but would rather not if there is another way round it...so over to you guys :)

Here are a few pics of the case, plus one of how its currently set up

How about cutting a 120 (is that the CPU fan size?) hole above the CPU cooler and mounting the fan just above the heatsink rather than directly on it, it could get better air form the outside world (provided of course you don't want to put anything on top of it)

You could even consider having the fan blowing out the top of the case, taking the hot rising air straight off the CPU heatsink, but I'm not sure how well that would work (if at all). If you did the same for the PSU it might help too.

Maybe drilling a ton of (speed!) holes in the sides/top/bottom/wherever! could help.

Bit of a tricky one with all that heat and such a cramped case!

thanks guys

Not soo fussed on temps, just as long as its stable and quiet

Surely 5v 60mm fans are practically worthless?

at the min the 140mm fan is sucking air off the cpu rather than blowing down onto it. From my messing about with shuttles etc and their heatpipe coolers i found having a fan sucking away from the heatsink worked better than blowing onto it, providing theres somewhere for the air to go

At the min im leanin towards the millions of holes round the fan and cpu socket in the lid as it seems the best way

and yeah, my original plan was to get a low end e6320 or something as that would run close to passive nicely but i couldnt resist a quad lol more money than sence apparantly
