So EA have announced Need for Speed World as a FREE PC exclusive game.

However don't get too excited, whilst it's free to get, if you wish to get deeper into the game then you have to pay to access the content.

Graphics wise it looks nice, idea wise? I'm not so sure.

So what are the thoughts on this? Does this have the potential to change the way games are bought and played?

i personally don't think it will work,i know wow works but some games havent got that much playability in them.

i dont mind paying £30 for a game and that's that but anything more than the retail price i certainly will not pay any more.

some people might like this idea.

EA are doing this with a lot of there games, splitting them between free to play with micro payments and normal full releases.

Or as no doubt the money men put it "Exploring new revenue streams"

Seems like a good idea to me, just gotta wait and see what the pricing structure will be like. I like the idea of actually being in the world in your car and not sat in some lobby and joining races all the time.

I'm glad to see EA pushing this area of selling games, paying for an advantage over free to play people is a common thing in free mmo's, and it works really well. if they released a much better car as DLC to a paid game, everyone would get annoyed, but as it's free, it forces people to either go buy the better car, or be stuck losing on a game they haven't paid for. also, completely removes piracy and stuff :D

oh, then they go and release an even faster car the next month ;)

I'd expect the payment system for this could well venture down the path of paying for in game money.

Say £5 = £50,000 or £500,000 in game cash which can then be spent on upgrades to cars, or new cars etc. etc.

I think they'd be better off setting it up so you could basically get a decent car (stuff like 911 GT3s, Gallardos) for £1-£2 and do a decent tuning job on a car for 50p-£1 say. Cheap enough that you can slowly buy a nice collection of decent cars for roughly the same as you'd spend on a game anyway (£30). Maybe even topping up the money by winning races, so it encourages you to spend a bit initially to get a decent race winning car.

If they take the mick and it costs you £5 just to buy an M3 or something, it'll just fail massively.

Looks decent though with lag it might be annoying for open world racing and I hope they'd have drift mode like in Underground.

DLC I'm not too bothered about with a free game since most MMO's we pay about £10 a month to play. If I play it enough then I probably would buy some of the shop items.

Don't think I have been yet, though it did mention something about being accepted in waves so maybe later.

edit - in fact im glad i didn't get accepted to this round as i'm away and it finishes before i get back to my gaming PC! :p
