Need gaming rig. How much will I realistically need to spend?

So I'm going to need a complete new setup, desktop, monitor, mouse, keyboard etc.

I've not got a budget as such, but don't really want to spend a lot more for minimal performance benefits.

I'll be playing all performance heavy games and want them to run smoothly on the highest settings.

I had a rough figure in my mind of around 1,200 but I can push on that if needed.

Also I'll consider building it myself if there's significant benefits, but am concerned about the lack of warranty in this.

Would really appreciate any help!

Before I even read the replies I was about to post this:

"a budget of £1200 all in will net you a potent gaming machine and all essentially peripherals to match"

Seems I was right on the money :D

Thanks for the replies guys, going to look into this now.

Couple of questions, do you get no warranty for a self build?

Should I really go for Win 8 (I despise it), is there any performance benefits?

You get warranty on the individual parts but not he system itself.

So if you have a problem you cant just send the system to us, you would have to remove the problem part (so you would have to self diagnose).

Whereas with a pre-built you can send the whole system back and we will do the rest :)

Pros and cons to both

Individual part - you have to diagnose it, have to remove it, have to send it back

System - you don't diagnose it, you send the system back, but at your cost, and you take responsibility in sending it - imagine if it got smashed!!

nail on the head there :)

If a system arrives to us clearly courier damaged we sort that out with the courier and provide new parts/system if required. As long as the system was packed appropriately,

Same goes on the way back to you.

Oh nice. I thought a drama would ensue. Glad to see OCUK taking on that responsibility. Are there guidelines on what constitutes "packaged appropriately"?

Might make my decision on whether to buy pre-made easier ;)

Cheers Nath

Essentially it is just your original packaging or if you no longer have that, something similar.

If you sent a tower without a box and just in brown paper that counts as inappropriately packaged lol.

Thank you very much, clears that up =)

Just wondering whether to go for the more expensive GPUs suggested or stick with the lower end.

Also some of those cases I don't like so will pick one meself as well as switch to Windows 7.

I've decided to spend that bit more on GPU and go for the one lee32uk (essential going for his build), the card is around £330, would people say this is the best for the price? Is it offering signficant benefits over the cheaper ones suggested here?

referring to VTX3D Radeon R9 290 V2 X-Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (VXR9 290 4GBD5-DHX) (£319.99)

The Gigabyte 290 is now at the same price so I would go for that one.

Also you can get the Corsair RM650W for the same price as the BeQuiet one in my spec.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Radeon R9 290 OC WindForce 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-R929OC-4GD) £329.99
1 x Corsair RM Series RM 650 '80+ Gold' 650W Power Supply (CP-9020054-UK) £79.99
Total : £419.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

You would also need to choose a different keyboard, as the Gigabyte K3 is out of stock atm.

Already spotted the price on the new card and changed it, have now changed the Power supply over, cheers for the heads up pal!
