so i was wandering what is a good 500gb hdd on the market now, would have 3 partitions, xp/vista, games, the rest.

whats the best bargain/value for money/performance now. i havent brought a hard drive in ages and im still using one old ide 120gig for my "gaming" rig. and its not helping load times or the amount of storage at all (i mean come on, i can barely hold a few newer games espcially with the likes of steam etc which is a bit of a pain to download when ever i feel like it).

at the moment hard drives seem so cheap that theres no reason not to...now someone remind how to do an xp install :o j/k but really ive never used sata 2 on a pc that ive built or used. is there anything i should be aware of, drivers and the like. same goes for an optical drive im getting but not going to make a new thread.

From all reports around the forum the samsung F1 drive's appear to be the dog's ********
as far as driver's are concered it will depend on your mobo
i know with my mobo i only needed drivers when i decided to create a raid array with both xp and vista
however if your going to run dual boot you will need to primary drive's and will require to install XP first

I have got two 500GB Samsung F1's and they are very fast and quiet. The only time I needed any drivers was for raid.

Does 32MB cache have much effect over 16MB on 500GB drives? I'm just asking as Samsung drives are 16MB and there are some 32MB ones for similar prices.

neoboy,

I'd of thought more cache = better, but ...............

"As memory prices have fallen into the "dirt cheap" range, drive manufacturers have realized that they can increase the size of their buffers at very little cost. Certainly nothing is lost in doing this; extra cache won't hurt performance; but neither does it greatly improve it"

That's from storagereview

So really it seems it may not be too beneficial

Ciao
