• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

NEED HELP ASAP! Computer shuts down on heavy load, gaming or stress testing.

Cheap PSUs can always be risky, because they don't have the safety features of better ones, let alone whether they will perform well under load (ie keeping steady power levels).

What's likely happening is that your PSU has overdraw protection, and when the graphics card is asking for more power than the PSU can supply, the PSU is shutting down. You don't want to be running any system where those protection features are constantly being triggered, as it means you're pushing the PSU too far. Sooner or later, the protection circuits may fail and you'll get a surge into your motherboard.

It's like trying to pull too much power through a plug socket. Things get hot, wires melt, breakers pop, fuses blow. The safety features work, but you don't want to be relying on them, or ignoring the source of the problem that keeps activating the safety features.

Could someone please tell me, why it may be the psu? is it faulty etc?

It is not faulty, it is just tripping its power protection features. This means that the load you are putting it through is too much for the 12v rail on the PSU. While it may be able to deliver power for a bit, it cannot do it under your current loads continuously.

Simply put, the PSU is no faulty but it might as well be, as the only cure would be to get a PSU which can deliver enough current on the 12v rail continuously. Sooner or later, the PSU will degrade and it will eventually die before the protection mechanisms kick in. At this point, you will lose a PSU with the possibility of other parts going with it.

The Superflower 550w is what you should be looking at for a reliable long term replacement. Bump that a bit higher if you plan on going SLI in the future.

Would this be suitable? ***

Competitor linking is against the rules.

TBH you seem to be linking PSUs at around £60 mark, which is what many others here have specced. Just because the power rating is bigger, it doesnt mean its better, your current PSU is proof of that! While coolermaster isnt a bad brand, i dont see why you would pay for it when there are better options available at the same price. Reviews i have found mention this PSU dropping in efficiency a fair bit under load.

Understood, never knew. Im going to purchase the superflower 550W. After seeing multiple people telling me the danger of my gaming pc, I am not risking it no more.

AFAICT that's a CWT unit. There seem to be a lot of complaints about those on the Corsair forums (my failed TX750M was CWT and had a faulty fan controller).

Broke a few re-branded CWT corsair units myself under reasonable loads. Not sure why you went for that one after all the other recommendations coming in at the same price but it will probably be okay.

On my graphics card box, it recommeneds a 600w psu, and my friend has used for 3 years and says its good.

/facepalm

Most people on this threaded recommended the superflower which has more amps on the 12v rail. This is the number which counts, not the power rating, or you would still have the 700w artic. The cx series is CWT, which was respectable in the past, but has gone down hill somewhat and a few people in this thread have had cx PSU's break without reaching their power rating (including two myself).

The Superflower was the same cost, has GOLD efficiency, is better at delivering constant power at higher loads and has a slightly better 12v rail.

This info was all in the first page of this thread, given by experienced tech enthusiasts and PC builders. I would recommend changing your order to the superflower so that you can get the most of your money but i doubt that will happen. I hope your PSU will fair better than any of my CXs or any of these peoples:

Like people have said, not a terrible PSU but its still not great and the internals are cheap. Money much better spent elsewhere. Budget internals for a PSU is just not worth paying for, whether they slap a £5 price tag or £500.

The Superflower PSU is enough. Interestingly, the CX600 i think has 40 amp on the 12v but all these figures are made up to protect manufacturers. The system wont need the rating they give but even if it did, the superflower would be up to the task.

confirmed 100% superflower will work a dream, and not get current problems, before I purchase

This screen grab is from the manufactuers website with the specs on the PSU in question, as you can see a nice strong 12v rail.

I wont link to their page as they might be classed as a competitor.

The Superflower is a much better buy than anything CWT knocked together in a shed by a man with a pipe and flat cap.

Corsair had a good name, but that was gained while they were using Seasonic to build their PSUs. When they moved to using a lot of cheaper CWT units, people experienced a drop in quality. So while a lot of people still rate the Corsair name, it's what is inside the PSU that is important, not the sticker on the outside. Right now the best PSUs seem to be Seasonic, Superflower and BeQuiet (in no particular order). You wouldn't have loads of people here recommending one of the above if it wasn't true.
