Need help deciding on bass focused headphones for Music/Gaming

Have had the Nighthawks, DT770, K712, X2HR amongst a ton of others from Grado, Sennheiser and God knows what else.

I would not get the Nighthawks. You will be wasting your money.

Just get the X2HR and plug them into your soundcard. They will do what you are looking for. K712 would be my go to for everything, with good bass, but you'll need an amp to rub them. X2HR won't.

I think after hours and hours of forums/ reviews/ researching on audio in general I've made my mind up. After all of the suggestions here I finally fell into looking at the DT 770 pros, I would prefer the 1770 but the price jump was too high for me
DT770 is certainly capable gaming headphone for closed headphone of its price level.
Don't own it, but tested it for 5-10 minutes with game recordings in shop last year...
After first trying Amiron Home and having used open headphones 15+ years.

With closed design bass also goes deep.
Though for "competitive" gaming that bass would actually need toning it down some with equalizer if you want good distinguishing of simultaneous foot steps etc.

Sound Blaster Z definite is rather mediocre for headphones.
Max output voltage and current/power aren't that great.
And ~20 ohm output impedance isn't good for lower impedance headphones.
With Creative's £70 B-stock prices external Sound BlasterX G6 USB sound card is very good buy now.

Depends really everyone has their tolerance. I just can't stand headphones that can't provide much of an out of head experience for games. The HD650 have probably a near perfect response for music but gaming they were too closed in due to the upper mid rise. Voices have good weight, body but when it came to sound other aspects they were to close to the ears to give me a sense of depth. Nighthawks have a massive upper mid recession so in theory should give you depth perception
With that very notable sub 1kHz focus doubt Nighthawks are anything but at best average for binaural cues:

400 Hz and below is 10dB above 2 kH and 15dB above 3 kHz...

Binaural cues depend lot on those upper mids/lower treble.

HyperX Cloud Orbit. The planar magnetic drivers produce incredible, punchy and deep bass. The only thing about them is the noise from the DAC/amp onboard - there’s a faint hissing. You get used to it tho :)

Headphones like the HD800 tend to give good depth perception due to the decrease in upper mids. I never hear 1k affecting depth too much as long as the upper mids are pushed back significantly like say the LCD-2C or 2F which have decent DP also. Audeze phones all have a 1k elevation which is the dominant aspect of their FR, each unit varies how much of course. I agree that upper mids is a big factor in that aspect. The issue with the Nighthawks isn't just the mid bass it's the cup reverb and lack of air flow, that grill does absolutely nothing to air flow in practice. I have no idea how Skylar can say he went for a speaker like presentation. In measurements something with that FR can give the indication of some depth but if you see CSD results and in listening test they're anything but reverby, boxy.

So just discovered the beyerdynamic custom studio which seem similar to the dt 770 (80 ohm) but have a removable cable and not as spikey treble. To me this sounds like an improved variant of the dt 770 pros, does anyone know if they are practically the same headphone cos it would really benefit from having a removable cable

So the DT 770 Pros (80 ohm) arrived today and i'm quite impressed, the only thing I have an issue with is the sound is relatively fatiguing or restrained as before using my soundcard at high volumes, which I'm not sure if this is a issue of the interface or the headphones inherently.

I know budget dac/amps wouldn't cost me much, however losing my 5.1 surround and equaliser from the soundcard would suck cos they both seem to massively improve the audio vs phone for example. Either way I will probably buy equipment down the line, but at the moment very surprised by these headphones especially that I can have a flat EQ and still have lively music.

Thanks to all the input!

They do have sharp peaks it tends to get masked well by the bass but some people don't do well with Beyer peaks. I would suggest try stuff a small bit of toilet paper or a flat cotton pad in the cups where your ears rest; see if that reduces the peak enough, if it doesn't add another layer and so on and tune to taste, it's a simple thing I'll use if I like a headphone but have issues with peaks like the Q701 or K612 for example.
