Hello, building a new pc been a console gamer for past 2 years and i miss pc gaming. Its between th i7 8700k or the ryzen 2700

I cant decide what cpu to go for. Motherboad price isnt a issue for me If my understanding is right the ryzens offer better value and better for general useage and a upgrade path a year or two down the line. Where intels win in pure gaming even though i seen some benchmarks where the gap is small and some where the gap is 20 to 50 fps which i consider a lot.

I will be using it for gaming mainly, 4k for single player games and 1080p for competitive online games over a 144hz or 250hz monitor. With plans to do a bit of streaming and video editing. Also plan to water cool the cpu.

I was leaning towards the ryzens even orderd the mb but the pure gaming performance of the intels is making me wonder if i did the right thing havea day or two to change my mind

And a question with the ryzens the x chips are pretty much overclocked out the box and use more power if i was to overclock the base versions of the cpu would they draw the same power and heat as the x versions .

Just wondering whats best for me and what other people decided to go with.

Thank you :)

ok .. so what card are you going to be using ? I'd pick the 2700 over intel .. well because I have a 1700 @3.8 with mem at 3400 ..
with the 2700 on water your going to get 4ghz easy and better mem speeds maybe even 3800 once the bios comes around ..
so what your going to save on an intel chip you can put towards a better gpu ..
or you can go down the thread ripper road in which case intel has nothing to beat it on price point ..
and would be superb for video editing

Ordered a x470 board heard memory speeds was better and more stable. Was plaing to go for a 1080 ti but might go 2nd hand / budget route to get me by till the next gen cards are announced or till prices drop a bit more. Its a lot of money to invest in a grapics card when nobody knows whats coming round the corner or when.

My old build was a 1070 and 2500k so want something better long term :)

Seems a bit odd really, since you are saying 4k for single player, and 144-250Hz for Esports etc. You can't get a monitor that does 250Hz and is 4k, so really you'd be looking at 4k with 144Hz max, which therefore limits you to 1080p 144Hz, unless you buy two separate monitors.

So, to answer your questions, if you end up with a GTX 1080 Ti, then at 1080P Ultra settings you might get 144+ FPS on most titles, with a 8700K, but the Ryzen system would not be far behind it/the same in most games.

If all you are doing is using it as a gaming machine, and you don't care about the cost/value for money, then go Intel, since you'll get more FPS, but your FPS:£ ratio will be poor.

I have a 4kv tv so using that for 4k :)

Gone with the 2700 :) overall better value i think at 4k its ll about gpu anyways and should be able to hit the fps sweet sport for competitive games :) its my first amd since the athlon and sempron :o

I was about to recommend you to go with a 2700x instead of the 2700 you see.

Anyways enjoy your new processor, and yea amd wins for value for performance here.

Streaming/4k gaming and video editing... 2700 all the time.
The 8700k if all your doing is playing at 1080p and wanting very high fps.

The 2700 will not be far behind the 8700 in most titles even lower down the resolutions, but at 4k it wont matter.

You will probably need the performance of a pair 1080Ti's and a LN2 cooled CPU to get the benefit of a 150-250hz screen. Not to mention a game that can actually render at those kinds of rates. Those games are rare things nowadays.
