I was wondering if those with either of the above chips could post what overclocks they're managing along, the voltage required, if it's a 165 or a 170 and the stepping of their CPU. I only ask as I'm not happy at 'only' getting 2.7Ghz from my x2 3800 so I was thinking of getting one :)

Search the forum from about 12 months ago. Every Tom, Dick and Harry was overclocking Opterons around then.

Most still wont do much past 3 gig and even then to reach 3 gig you gotta be lucky. You wont notice much, if any, difference from 2.7 to 3g tbh

Probably but I got the overclocking bug now and I'm not content with what I already have! If it does more than 2.7GHz with less voltage I'll be happy, as mines running at about 1.6v atm :(

Opteron 170 CCBWE 0551UPMW
I run mine at 2.5ghz (1.37v) @ 42c peak load (although this varies dependent on ambient temp) although it may do 2.6ghz or 2.7ghz at a push (Higher temps & High Volatages)

Hi,

older 165 CCBBE 0551 WPMW 2.6 @ 1.45v 2.7 @ 1.5v+ and very hot

new 165 LCBBE 0646 RPMW bought from an internet shop which I think is based abroad but has a UK front end. 2.7@ 1.45v 2.75 @ 1.5v+ and very hot

new 170 CCBBE 0615 DPMW from [No competitors!] 2.75@ 1.35v , 2.95@ 1.475v .... been too busy fully push. Very good chip. core temp reports 20C, 22C at idle ! though speed fan shows 28. This chip runs far cooler (10+C) than either of the others at any full load setting even though the oldest 165 had had the IHS removed. full load at 2.95 Ghz and sped fan showing 55C, core temps 52, 57. Yes it's a little hot but the 165's are hotter than this at 2.7ish

All on air - Thermaltake big typhoon with lapped base.

Just started a thread in overclocking. CCBBE 06xx are mostly excellent. Will do 2.85-3 with ease.

I'm just deliberating now when to sell up and upgrade. While the parts have some value still, or later when they have depreciated a bit but new bits are cheaper and the time is more convenient.

I'd probably suggest the latter, the technology will be more refined for one and also if you were thinking about going Conroe, the 6600 etc should be cheaper. Even then you'd still probably get a tidy sum for your Opty judging by your results in the other thread :p

The more votes for "wait" I get the easier it is, thanks :) Just so much more sensible but it's killing me watching the value go down when I paid £150 for it a year ago :( :)

my 165 is CCBBE 0610DPMW, supposedly one of those able to hit 3Ghz "easily".

mine topped out at 300 x 9 with volts at 2.53 on water. This could be due to the limits of the motherboard or my ineptitude at overclocking. I shall probably be disposing of this soon to go C2D!

A 900MHz overclock isn't bad but I think these chips do require a bit of tinkering to get the max out of them. Voltage and heat obviously isn't your problem so I'd fiddle with the RAM next.

Mine's sitting at 2.6 Ghz but I haven't pushed it much further as the temps are rather high. If you're already getting 2.7Ghz out of an X2 3800 I personally wouldn't bother buying an opty as there's some new steppings out which are a bit rubbish really (mine is one of them). Don't get me wrong, 2.6Ghz is plenty enough for me (same speed as one of the top endish AMD CPUs), but you really won't see value for money if you swap your CPU for an opty and it gives you anything less than 3 Ghz. Even then it probably won't be much of a leap. Due to Murphy's law (the bloke out of Robocop) you'll either get an opty that tops out at 2.8Ghz or you'll be shot to death in an abandoned warehouse.

Unless you're some kind of overclocking freak that loves a challenge, I'd stick with what you've got. 2.7Ghz is not to be sniffed at.

*edit -- just realised you're already bought it. I think you'll be lucky to beat your existing CPU if the stepping is similar to mine.

Got my Opty 170 at 2.73ghz 1.5volts, most dual core A64/Optys max out around the 2.7->2.8ghz mark with some very good examples going to 2.9 ish, very rarely 3ghz, that's the limit of the architecture

That table shows that 20% out of all of those get to 3GHz and the one I have ordered is 3GHz capable so we shall see, not sure bout the OPs though, as he doesn't give the full stepping. My x2 3800 isn't too shabby so I should be able to get a few quid for it plus I fancied a new overclocking project and I don't need to go Conroe just yet.
