Need help from Opteron 165/170 owners!

Mine Oppy170 was a CCBWE 0609FPAW.
Had it benchmark stable at 2.75GHz with 1.55v - got very toasty though.
According to the link I posted earlier in the thread that's 150MHz above average for that stepping though, so I'm happy with that :)

I have the same stepping, Opty 170 but I can only get mine to run at 2.67Ghz. That's probably because my mobo (Asus A8R32MVP) will only let me specify a max voltage of 1.4V although according to Asus Probe it's about 1.45V.

At that speed and voltage it's running at about 45 degrees with an Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro hsf.

Anything above this and the PC just locks up or fails to boot :(

Does your board not have the vcore overvolt option like the Deluxe version does?

You should definetly be able to get a higher voltage.
There may be an option somewhere un obvious that stops high voltages being selected, it may also be a jumper on the motherboard.

Yes it does but it seems to cause more problems than solutions as the only option it gives is 'overclock vCore' which is an automatic overvolting feature.

Using this feature causes random lock-ups when the going gets tough and the CPU demands more voltage. Keeping it at 1.4 - 1.45V seems to be the most stable option.

The mobo I have is the A8R32MVP Deluxe which has these features but the voltage options are very conservative for high overclocking as far as the CPU is concerned.

You can't have the voltage higher than 1.4v without using the overvolt feature which adds another 0.1v or 0.2v i.e 1.6v total. The only problem with this board as far as I can see is that it doesn't give the extra 0.2v, it's more like 0.15v imo.

Got my 170 in the post today, currently doing 2.8GHz and stock volts, not tried 3GHz yet though. I'm not sure if I did a super amazing job with the AS5 or if there's just far better IHS contact than with my x2 3800 because idle temps are currently 25c and 30c

Only 165 i got now is at 2.6Ghz 1.4v and is around a yr old i guess, not the best i had but got really good prices for my other better clockers. No idea on the stepping now sorry.

Would it be worth getting an opty 170 and clocking it to say 2.8-3Ghz compared to my current 146 @ 2.8Ghz?

I put together a friends machine which has an e6600 in it and it flies, just wondering if i would get a bit of a performance increase.

If your just playing games I wouldn't really bother, the extra core isn't going to help in that.
As to general usage it will feel nippier around windows and great when your multitasking.
If you do any heavy 2d/3d work it will be great for that.
