Need help getting the best out of my kit... please?

I've installed it and had a play... I'm still trying to work out how to setup custom resolutions.

It keeps defaulting to the lowest res, which is the amp. It keeps thinking it's on a separate screen when in actual fact it's only the one monitor.

Another update for yourself.

After using the other forum as suggested above I got told to use my graphics cards hdmi for the sound and stick to the dvi for the picture to avoid the terrible picture.

Initially I didn't bother connecting the amps hdmi out to my monitor as I wasn't using it anyway. However without doing this the sound wouldn't work which is really annoying.

So it's all hooked up and I am using the dvi straight to the monitor and just select the source on my monitor.

However it is still stuck on 1080p which is really annoying considering I'm bypassing the amp for the video feed.

So I have black bars at the top and bottom, but at least it looks in proportion, no overscan etc. Which is good. The sound is also pretty sweet.

I still can't tell the difference between a .flac and .mp3 though :( Must be my ears.

That is how I have to have it setup.

i've not seen a single av amp that supports 1200p or above(1920x1200). im not saying they dont exist but i cant name one that does. Now, clone will always chose the lowest maximum resolution of the two displays connected as it's own maximum resolution. In otherwords, the amp is reporting 1920x1080 as the max res so that is what you get. Clone wouldnt be clone if the card is outputting two different signals.

the only real 'fix' if you want to stick to hdmi is to use extend instead - make the amp the secondary display. This way both the amp and the monitor are fed the correct resolutions and you still have your hdmi audio. I do this myself when using my monitor. The downside is you loose the mouse on the second display sometimes but it works.

Thanks' very much James. Tell me something. Is there really a difference between (real life difference) to using the HDMI audio over the optical. I still got 5.1 with it.

well, you gain LPCM output and hd audio bitstreaming from blurays. that can be a big bonus but it depends very much on your amp and speakers. i've got a fairly decent av amp (onkyo 805) and tbh i'm not that bothered by it. If i had better speakers then maybe it'd make more difference but i dont so there you go :p

As you have probably guessed, audio equipment isn't my strong suit. Think I'd notice a difference with my kit?

going by what you've said so far, i doubt it tbh. you probably would be fine with using spdif :)

My ears not trained enough haha. Fair enough. I'll stick with the extended display for the time being, see how I get on. Probably revert back to spdif in a couple days when I get bored of my mouse going for walks on it's own.

you will notice the difference between optical and HDMI, as above poster has said LPCM/HD audio from a HD source as its 6 or 8 channels of uncompressed sound...optical and coaxial are 2 channels split 5.1 ways by a receiver.

I used to own a Sony 870QS that used to sound fantastic, and had it for donkeys years until I changed over to a Denon 2310, and trust me with my existing speakers the sound went from amazing to out of this world with all sound especially HD audio. Sounds a lot crisper/precise...well to my ears :)
