Need help installing RAM

I've bought some new additional RAM to add to my (4 year old) machine, and I'm having a few problems...

OCUK built my machine and my first question would be why would they install the original RAM in slots 1 and 2?

I can see that the slots are set out in an odd configuration - 4, 2, 3, 1 - which seems utterly bizarre - Is it most likely that OCUK just missed the fact this (Gigabyte Designare z170) motherboard seems to have gone with an unusual slot order?

the way the ram is installed is how its meant to be in dual channel mode, if you use slot 1 and 3 the pc will most likely not boot, if you bought a quad set then just populate all the slots and away it goes. If you do add more ram make sure its the same kit ideally, if not buy a second set that is the correct speed and has the closest timings to the set thats already in there

I don't understand that - that seems unlike the naming standard referred to everywhere I've read.

Yeah... about that - I've got slightly different RAM in pretty much every respect - existing is 2 x 8GB of Team Group Vulcan T-Force DDR4 PC4-24000C16 3000MHz (CAS 16-18-18-38). New stuff is some Crucial Ballistix DDR4 3200MHz (CAS 16-18-18-36).

If I can get it to work, is there any preferential way of ordering the sticks? - Faster stuff in DRR4_1 and DDR4_2?

as above installing 2 makes isn't recommended as the faster ram will always default to the slower speed that is installed, changing things around wont help either, if the sticks or speed was the same the impact wouldn't be that big, but a bit of a waste of money as the 3200mhz kit will only run at 3000mhz because of the other slower kit :(
 
Just to update, I got the Crucial RAM running, but as predicted it didn't seem very stable, so decided to send it back, and went for 2 16GB sticks of HyperX which worked straight away and so far with no problems whatsoever.
