Hello there,
I have just got windows 7 and I am trying to install it, I put the disk in and it goes to a black screen which says "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key".
I press a key and it just pops up again, I have restarted several times but it keeps happening.

Please help.

Did you set the dvd drive as the first boot drive in BIOS.

I suspect the system is looking at the empty hard drive.

I press F11 and it took me to the asrock uefi setup utility.
There is a box that says please select boot device, and in that says SATA: ST500DM002-1BC142. Im guessing thats the HDD, and theres nothing else.

are you using a 500GB hard drive? if so then yes that sounds like its detecting the hard drive.
What port have you plugged the Disc drive too?

To even begin to help you, you need to post your specs. What is your motherboard model? Did you try pressing F2 or Delete to get into the BIOS and change the boot order? Have you checked to make sure your CD/DVD/Blu Ray drive is connected correctly? Do you see motherboard diagnostics at bootup? Does it show whether it has detected your optical drive?

I have a 500GB HDD, Intel Core I5 2500K, ASROCK Z68 Extreme4 Gen3, 8GB of kingston ddr3 ram. The DVD drive is connected with a SATA cable.

Press F2 or Delete to run UEFI setup.
Press F6 for Instant Flash.
Press F11 for Boot menu.
Press TAB to switch screen.

Those are my options.

If you only see your Hard Drive in the F11 Boot Menu then it's not detecting your DVD Drive so that's the problem. Check the connections and try a different drive or connect the drive to another machine and see if it's working

Press F11
Then should offer you option to select boot order

Usually you will have HDD/CD/Flash

So you want it too boot from CD first, then HDD.

If it doesn't see a CD drive then would assume the CD isn't installed correctly.

Well the DVD drive is plugged in properly (power and sata) I plugged the sata cable into another port but its still not showing up.

+1

I would suggest checking the SATA cable into the DVD drive is securely attached and connect the other end of the SATA cable into any of the lower SATA ports on the motherboard (not the top two SATA connections nearest the RAM - as these are controlled by a marvell controller, not the intel chipset).

Also, make sure the separate SATA power connection from the PSU is securely connected into the DVD drive.

I just connected the DVD sata cable into the port where the HDD is and it was detected, but the HDD wasnt and I just plugged the HDD into the port above the DVD drive and now none are being detected.

And when i plug the HDD into any other port, the only boot devices that come up are - SATA: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7280S and UEFI: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7280S,
does this mean the HDD isnt being detected?

Make sure that both DVD drive and HDD are plugged into the Black SATA ports (SATA2 ports connected to the Intel chipset) and then try the Boot menu again.

Personal preference :)

personally i have boot from CD then HDD - Obviously if your booting and you have a CD/Music in there it will fail, but i prefer this option so i can run HDD/Memory stick checks a lot on this pc as its on last legs :)

but all in personal choice
