I am starting to provide some training at my home and I would like to prevent my students to access the internet but be able to access a small intranet I have create.

Anyone can point me to the best way to do this? I would prefer something hardware based then installing software on each PC to limit internet access, thanks.

I beleive a lot of routers can do this - i know a fair few Linksys models seem to be able to limit access by machine.

it depends on your connection.

From memory the ancient BEFSX41 had the option, and I know my current WRT54GS has the option under access restrictions to either allow only listed PC or deny listed PC's (and what days/time to do it).

Both models mentioned are cable/dsl routers without a modem built in (they need an ethernet modem), but I suspect that feature is probably present in most current Linksys routers.

either that or remove the default gateway on each machine....

they will still use the dns to find your intranet ip, which should be in their local range, so will be accessible without a gateway....

Alex

edit: not 100% sure you can remove a gateway on DHCP leased machines...
