Overclockers
Hi a couple of weeks I left my first post on the forums, it was about upgrading my cpu. The feedback was very helpful. The problem i find myself is that due to unexpected costs, i will not have the funds i require to get mobo or the cpu I would like. The silver lining is that my cpu although rubbish, is pretty close to upcoming games minimum requirements. So i was wondering if there could be a overclocking solution to my problem. My goal is get the cpu to 2.4+ hopefully thats possible.
Data
Cpu E6550 @ 2.33
P5KPL-VM 775 mobo
Gts 450
3500mb ram
Please note that i have never overclocked a cpu before, so please excuse me if i act like a complete dunce.

Have you checked out the Beginners Guide to Overclocking sticky?

Have a read through that to understand all the terms, etc.

There should be plenty of guides around online to start you off, try searching 'overclocking for beginners' into google or something.

Here's a couple of site's it comes up with:

Beginners Guides: Overclocking the CPU, Motherboard & Memory

Overclocking tutorial for newbies/beginners

A Beginner’s Guide to Overclocking Your Intel Processor

Have a read through some guides, give it a go, and if you need any specific help come back and ask:)

Thanks for youre relpy, guess i should have checked for guides.my bad. i just wanted to know whether my goal was obtainable ?

not sure if you actually meant your goal is 2.4+ or if you meant 3.4+ but I've seen people OC their e6550 to like 3.33GHz so you should be able to get somewhere lol

Tbh I'm not the best person to give advice on overclocking, hence why I gave all the links:D lol

You should be able to clock it to at least 3ghz, so 2.4ghz is near-garantee to be obtainable. What CPU cooler do you have?

i still have the stock fan, not sure what type (is there any way i could check). good to know that i could surpass my goal. read that mobo is just as important as the cpu in ocing, is my one good enough?

Not really sure on that board but it should be fine. You might get limited with the temps then if you're using the stock cooler, might want to invest in a better cooler. But see how it goes first with the stock one.

With your CPU it's pretty relevant, all you need to do is raise the FSB and CPU voltage if needed, and lowering the RAM multi/speed if it becomes the limiter.

You're going to need an aftermarket cooler though mate.

If you manage 2.5ghz on stock it's still going to minimum requirements you're only going to be gaining 2-4fps from that clock.

Need to get it to 3GHZ to see 10fps+ which will give you some headroom.

I'd recommend getting the Artic 7 Rev 2 cooler, is around £15 and I managed an extra 500mhz whilst still getting lower temps than before.

this is a very basic explanation of overclocking

its basic maths. your E6550 is rated at 1333mhz. you always divide this number by 4 so 1333/4= 333, this is your fsb. (or cpu frequency)
then your processor (cpu) has a multiplier of 7 (or cpu ratio)
so 333 x 7 = 2331mhz or 2.33GHz

boot into bios
unlink your ram, this means keep it at stock speed eg. 667mhz. 800mhz etc...., doing this means that the ram does not interfere with the cpu overclock

can you raise the fsb? yours is now 333. try rising it to 350
boot into windows
download realtemp and coretemp (google them)
install and run them
then download intel burn test (ibt) and run it.
have a look in task manager and notice how much free ram is listed.

in ibt set threads to 2 (for 2 cores) and then click on custom ram and enter an amount just below the free amount.
eg. i have 2520mb free ram. so i enter 2500 into the custom ram.
run the test for 5 passes.
keep an eye on temps (do not let it go over 65.c)
at final overclock spped, run IBT for 50 passes

if test runs fine, go back into bios, and change frequency (fsb) to 370 and repeat the tests.
keep doing this in 20mhz steps until windows will not boot. then just go back a step (remove 20 from the fsb) to the last stable frequency,
or
just raise the cpu voltage a couple of levels. it should now boot.
its a balancing act, higher voltages will get you higher fsb, but it will also give you higher temps.
your cpu is fine upto 1.5v

THE MAX TEMP FOR A E6550 IS 72.C.
TRY TO KEEP IT BELOW 60.C FOR 24HR USE

the trick is to do this step by step, just take your time

get the cpu maxed before increasing the ram speed

also if going down this route, please get a proper cpu cooler.

thank you j.col, a really clear explanation. it doesn't seem so daunting now. as i kind of want to the oc asap, what rating could i reach on my stock cooling(less than 2.8?).

That's a quality explanation and tutorial from j.col. Top marks to you sir:)
:o thanks :o

it depends on your temps, and your mobo.
i have a b3 q6600 and on stock speed and stock cooler all i could get was 2.8ish. and my temps were in the mid 70's
now with a better cooler i am at 3.4 and now my temps are low 60's :)

edit.
also IBT is extreme heat, normal day to day gaming will be at least 10-20.C less,
but its good to find an unstable overclock, you dont want a BSOD while in a game ;)

also there is more to it then that post above, NB, VTT etc... there is more knowledgeable guys on here then me, i just know the basics
