Hi all. I bought a Q6600 G0 from the members market and the owner said it would do 3.6 @1.4v

Only trouble is I'm not managing that :(

I have a MSI P35 Neo2-FR motherboard with v1.8 bios.
Artic Cooler 7 Pro
4gig Geil PC6400 RAM
GF 8800GT
Hiper 630w psu

In the BIOS I set it to 1.4v and 400fsb and it blue screens almost straight as it starts booting. I've notched it up to 1.45v in the BIOS and that gets into windows fine, but soon as I run Prime95, BSOD.
CPU-Z reads it as 1.4v when I set 1.45v in the BIOS, quite a droop!

The temps seem my biggest enemy. Right now at 3.45gig and 1.465v in the BIOS it's reading 86 degrees of heat in CPUID hardware monitor while I run Prime95 in Small FFT mode. This seems rather a lot?

I've tried taking it off and reseating the cooler and applying a thinner layer of AS5 but it's still about the same.

Any tips for me here? What FSB VTT Voltages should I be using?

Many thanks

Use Coretemp to monitor your temperatures.. also tell us what the VID reported by that is.. 83C is way too high if its a decent reading :S

Most Q6600 G0s only need about 1.3-1.4v to get to 3.6ghz...

Also what is your air flow through the case like? - are temps much lower with the side off?

also, how much voltage are you giving the northbridge?

Rather then aiming for 3.6 why don't you start off with 3.0Ghz and then work up from there.

On the heat front, the Artic Freezer 7 Pro is a good cooler but if the vCore gets high then you really need good air flow through the case, suppose this last point equally appies for some of the more expensive coolers too.

In terms of what the other person was getting, it depends on way too many factors to be a guarantee as far as I'm concerned.

Righto, well Coretemp shows the same temps

Here is a pic of my current BIOS settings

Air flow is fine, theres are lots of case fans and having the side off doesn't make much difference.

Heres are the windows settings. I note how much lower the VCORE is after you get into windows and run prime95 compared to the setting in the bios!

Should I maybe 'lap' my cpu and cooler? What do I need for that, fine grain sandpaper?

OK. I've set everything to stock volts and now set it to 3.1gig and it's running Prime95 happily at stock volts. I'll push it to 3.2 after a bit if it runs Prime95 for a while, I want to see it's limits at stock volts. It would seem extra volts really pushes the heat too high and possibly is causing the instability

Running @ 3.1gig prime95 temps are at 68/66 degrees across the cores.

Edit: I've ordered a heatsink lapping kit. I think I shall lap the CPU and the heatsink because those temps are less than ideal :(

It won't run more than 3133Mhz without additional vcore voltage

Is that about normal for these chips?

My Q6600 has the same VID as yours, I've had to set mine to 1.3 in the BIOS, 1.264 actual as reported by CPU-Z to get mine to run at 3.2. My temps max out at 63 running Prime95 for 2+ hours but my HSF is a Thermalright Ultra 120A, if I take the side panel off then the temps drops by 10 degrees as I've got crap air flow through my case.

Have you checked to make sure the HSF is mounted properly and making good contact? Also does the fan speed increase as the temps rise?

Seems very toasty for a little over 3.4Ghz, like IAmaTeaf says check your HSF is mounted well, also do you have the fan speed on the HSF fan controlled in any way, I'm wondering if maybe its not ramping up like it should?

I do yes, but it ramps up to the full 3000rpm as soon as it goes over 55 degrees which is pretty much what it idles at when I go for 3.6

I've got a cpu and heatsink lapping kit on the way so I plan on lapping them to see if it's a bad contact. I notice theres 4 degrees difference in temps between the 2 cores.

a slight difference between the cores is fairly normal, I'd drop your clock though until you can get the HSF adn CPU lapped.

Does the HSF get hot? When you're priming put your fingers over the HSF and see how hot it is. If it's hot then most likely you've got good contact, if it's luke warm then fell around the bottom of the HSF near the CPU and see how hot it is there.

i no there a fairly good cooler but i used one for a few months then all of sudden it went pants and then i swapped for a noct u12 one and then my temps dropped by a lot so i have a bigger cooler now on my spre machine and that has dropped a fair bit aswell under load its less than 40 and pushed hard.
ok its not the same chip but its being pushed with some volts.

might make a difference.

Those temps will kill your CPU - Fataly high for a Q6600

A lapping kit will/may ( no guarentee ) knock maybe 5 degrees of your temps.

You have a major problem !

What are your stock 2.4 ghz temps ?

You have yourself a toaster there mate!!! take it all off, use nail polish remove to remove all paste and stick a tiny amount on (not to tiny) and reseat everything.

at 3133Mhz and stock voltage it idles at high 40's and under load hits 69 degrees. I've reseated it 3 times and used the correct amounts of AS. I don't know whats up with it but for now I shall wait until I have lapped it

I mean there can't be anything different about my chip and cooler to anyone elses can there :S

WOW!

I've just finished lapping the heatsink and cpu and straight away there is a BIG difference. Now running Prime95 at my previous speed of 3133Mhz and stock volts and it's not going past 59 degrees, the fan isn't even having to speed up to keep things under control.

I'll try moving up the speed shortly :)
