Righto. Be gentle as i've only been playing with my Dad's install of Ubuntu for what, like 10 minutes! I'm trying to set it up so i can watch some tutorial/training videos i have on a portable hard drive. I've got as far as installing VLC and w32codecs, but although the files play with sound, there is no picture. Just black :(

Can anyone, in complete simpleton terms, help me out? Thanks!

If the above doesn't work, try opening up VLC and experimenting with the video output modules under Settings -> Preferences -> Video -> Output Modules

as a warning, whenever I do this it regularly hangs my X session and nothing gets it back except a hard reset, save anything you're doing first.

does the gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg not play them in totem?

$sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
Hmn i just tried this. I tried opening the video and it started playing with sound and a single frame of the video.. then Totem popped up asking for more codecs. I let it do it's thing by installing more but then it carried on playing - this time with a visualiser instead of the video (still with audio) :(

As for VLC, i cant see what i can play with in the Video Output Modules, even under advanced?

Reet.. have tried a bunch of other stuff and kinda got somewhere. I installed ffmpeg/libavcodec (i think!) and selected those to use in mplayer. The files open now and i even see pictures and get audio but its stuttering badly (~1fps). :(

What CPU does he have in the machine? Does his graphics card do any hardware decoding?

Hmn i was trying to find out the spec of the laptop and unfortunately i think it is fairly old. I've a bad feeling this might be the problem. That, or maybe he hasnt installed the graphics card drivers etc. properly (he gave it to me with just a fresh install of Ubuntu on it). However the sticker on it says it's a Celeron cpu so i guess that's not good news.

I'm not going to be there until Monday evening now, but he was gonna have a go. I'll get him to find out the spec.

Oh dear. My Dad has replied after doing that^ and says:

Processor : 0
VendorID : GEnuine Intel
CPU family: 6
Model:8
Modelname: Celeron (Coppermine)
Stepping :3
cpu Mhz: 497.569
cache size: 128 KB
lots of other random stuff. then
bogomips: 996.28
clflush size: 32

That's really not good is it. The vids are all H.264 with resolutions of either 600x450, 960x540 or 1024x528. I'm guessing it's going to be impossible to play them on that system, and that the stuttering i'm seeing is just the laptop not being able to cope? :(

Hum. Maybe my only option is to reduce the resolution/size etc.. to something playable by that spec. What kind of resolution will it need to be at to play ok, do you think?
